Videos from My Nepal Trip |
|
Got back on Friday from my trip to Kathmandu and the Himalayas... Just thought I would share a few of the videos with you. Totally awesome place, but the grinding poverty gives you perspective on the pampered lives we live in the 1st world. Nepal these days is a Maoist country where EVERYTHING is for sale (just a bit ironic don't you think). 2. Good to be back... Nothing like a trip to the 3rd world to see how lucky |
|
we are in terms of standard of living...
And, so culturally impoverished at the same time... :)

4. Some things looks spiffied up. |
|
And others the same since I was there in the mid-80's. Nepal is like going back in time. Were they still selling human skulls with decorative headbands?
If you want to compare then and now, click on my profile to my own page, then scroll down to A Trek in Nepal.

6. Took a look at your video... spiffed-up is not how I would term it |
|
Traffic is horrific... Because they use the dirtiest possible diesel, pollution is horrible... Not quite Lahore, or Mumbai but not far off.
There is virtually no clean water except at the tops of mountains and food is like playing Russian roulette.
My wife got a case of food (water I believe) poisoning while we were there.
The road to Pokhara is falling apart. Repairs have only been patchwork. Maoist community organizations exact tolls willy-nilly along the highway causing jams and further irritation.
I saw no skulls, but there were street boys sniffing glue openly on almost every corner.

8. Some things change, while others the same. |

The roads have always been a mess. Just before I arrived, one fell into a gorge along the Pokhara route with backpackers aboard. The police pulled over one bus we were on and made everyone riding on the roof get inside. Down the road a bit, they climbed out the windows, back onto the roof.
Despite precautions, like treating water with iodine, you can still get sick. I caught giardia. Luckily, after the trek.
At the time, deforestation was a concern. Trees were being felled for the tourist trade. As a result, they were having lots of landslides.

|
mudslides do occur (we saw several), but these are mostly a natural process now.

10. It was a last minute trip (I know sounds weird) |
|
This was the only significant time-off I shared with my daughters this Fall, so we went now instead of the Second Eid Holliday.
We planned everything in the space of about four days (including a VISA for our friend).
