Hey, NH (and thereabouts) DUers
You are invited to meet
Bob Bruce
Candidate for Executive Council
Wednesday, October 15th
Milly’s Tavern
500 Commercial Street
Manchester,
6-9 P.M.

Bob is a great guy who will make an excellent member of the council. Even better, Milly's has terrific beer brewed on premises!

FYI for the flatlanders: the Executive Council, aka Governor's Council, is a 5 member board that approves all judicial nominations, gubernatorial appointments, and state contracts over $5,000.

1. 5 people?
You entrust all that power to five people? Is that like the NH legislature? (I know that seems like a joke but I'm being serious...I'm not sure I really understand what the Executive Council exists for.)

4. It's a colonial relic
Only Mass and NH still have this thing, and Mass limits its power to judicial appointments and (I believe) pardons and parole hearings.

The governor in NH is, obviously, one of the weakest in the country. There's no cabinet as such; the department heads ("commissioners") are appointed to terms that don't correspond with the gubernatorial term. As a result, you had right-winger Craig Benson dealing with Jeanne Shaheen's appointees, and Democratic (sort of) governor John Lynch saddled with Benson's guys.

The House is a 400 member exercise in cat herding, so the real power lies in the hands of the state senate.

3. Hey, I've been there!
And if I had a vehicle I'd go again to support Bob. :)

5. Milly's is a cool place
The owners, Peter and Christine Telge, are big Obama supporters. Christine did well in a losing race for alderman last year, but I suspect that she will be back soon.
