So I'm watching the Phillies game when I hear shotgun blasts....
RIGHT OUTSIDE MY FUCKING DOOR!!!!

I am renting a farmhouse, and there are several barns on the property....but all the barns are close to the house.

So I'm sitting on the couch, eating my dinner and watching the Phillies game when we hear the blasts - there was no questioning what it was. Scared the living shit out of us.

Turns out it was a disgruntled farmer, "killing me some pigeons. They're shittin' all over my tractors."

 :scared:

Fuckin' rednecks.

1. Oh dear..that would have scared the living daylights out of me.
And certainly shooting a few pigeons isn't going to make his tractors any cleaner..there's always more.....I live near a shooting range and even that bothers me...
BTW--Hopefully the Phillies hang on for the win

5. TZ.....you saw this dude when you were here....
old guy with the white hair.

Standing there with a toothpick sticking out of his mouth.

I decided to walk over to him and find out what the fuck he was doing. He smiles at me. And when I said "Uh, can I ask why you're firing a shotgun?"

You saw his answer in my OP.

Two of those beautiful pigeons (the purple ones) were laying in a heap on the ground.

I love the scenery here, and that's about it.

I could never get used to the men around here....they're all HUGE, drive the hemi pick-ups with "God Bless America" on the tailgates, and gun racks in the bed.

Yee-haw! x(

if that happened here someone would be looking straight down the barrel of my AR-15 and I would not be afraid to use it, in fact I would probably be more likely to start shooting first and straighten it out later.

Just for reference, THIS is an AR-15

A laser dot sight and an M203...

and it looks to have a choice of muzzle brakes and a different handguard. All of which can be added to an AR easily.

I did not buy a single gun I own.

I had an uncle that was in the Marines as well and took me hunting and fishing when I was younger and bought me a small collection of rifles and one handgun.

I own a:

Weatherby chambered in .30-.378

A ruger 10/22

a Pre-Ban AR-15

and a Walther P99 in .40 S&W

51. Haha!
We almost got shot while doing the typical jarhead door knock at that guy's place! It was some guy who a roommate brought us to. In a typical high-rise apartment place. The roommate who brought us there actually had an HK-91 under his mattress in our room in the barracks, with a custom sniper trigger set. I didn't care, it wasn't pointed at me if it went off anyway. They never lifted up the mattresses in the health and comfort inspections, that I'm aware of. I guess they just assumed there wasn't a German death machine under them. That thing was NASTY! It would spit out spent casings with giant teeth marks in them, some of them bent in half. It was crazy. There was no recycling ammo with it.

72. A rifles job
is to cause catastrophic injury and death by putting one or more 55grain rounds into a targets chest cavity. Covering fire is not really relevant to this discussion, but that is what they do mostly in the real world.

A rifle is an offensive weapon. Like any weapon it is designed to give its user advantage in confrontation (securing control) by threatening or delivering death or screaming injury. A shotgun or handgun are more appropriate for self defense. A shotgun is the weapon of choice for that purpose at any range beyond pistol shot.

It is a CRIME to display a weapon unless you have justification to use it. Displaying a weapon endangers your life as you have now given a person justification to kill you. You WILL go to jail if you display a weapon without a pressing reason.

If you want to scare poeple you sneak up on them, if you want to kill them you fire a weapon (from cover) until they are dead.

90. Murder
you cant shoot someone for firing a shotgun on THEIR property at birds. She is a renter on his land. The person has to be a DIRECT threat.

There are simple laws that govern the use of deadly force in each state. If you own a weapon you should be aware of them.

To directly answer NO IT DOES NOT COME CLOSE to the legal requirements for killing a person, even in texas or florida.

Calling fish and game or LE is a reasonable response.

Try taking a few deep breaths and de-pressuring a little before you venture out of the Gun Dungeon, next time. Developing an aversion to publicly embarrassing yourself would help, as well.....

Sure...

Cuz when some unknown person starts shooting a shotgun right outside your door its always nice to be polite when you ask them why... :eyes:

Sorry but if that happened to me, the "shooter" would be answering while staring down the business end of a barrel, and he damn well better answer right...

or, the man could have had some decent common courtesy and WARNED them what he was going to do before he did it, now THAT would have been a good idea...

Have you ever lived out in the country? Do you know how long it takes the police to get there?

edit: I also have really good aim, therefore I would not be shooting like a lunatic. It would require only one shot.

70. Then you have a problem
several actually. A rifle is an offensive weapon, that is how it is viewed by most LEO and common sense having folks. It does a poor job in self defense situations, great when you need to hit something beyond 100m.

You cant display, let alone fire, a weapon without a really good reason. Jail or prison result. Walking out of your home with a semi auto rifle into a shotgun is a bad move. If a real danger was there you just got filled with 00 buck. Shotgun wins.

This person lives on rental property. Shooting stuff happens on farms, however most people are polite enough to call their neighbors to let them know they may be shooting.

While bad manners were in play, it appears no one was in danger of anything.

71. Just as an FYI.....
as I have stated throughout the thread, "shooting stuff on farms" is not legal in NJ.

There are stipulations of course, in regard to cattle farms....but this is a vegetable crop farm. This man violated at least 4 NJ state laws yesterday.

As for no one being in danger of anything....well nobody got hit, except the pigeons of course; but the point here is that my house is literally 100 feet or less from where he went on his spree; I have small children and dogs here - and there's a housing development right up the road. So was anyone in danger? IMO, yes - give a disgruntled 80-year-old man with a drinking problem a shotgun, and the potential for "danger" is most certainly there.

75. Laws vary by state and county
so here he would be rude. There you may want to call police or fish and game. Birdshot is harmless when fired into the air. When it falls it does not have enough energy to injure or damage.

My main comment was directed to the person overreacting to the situation up thread.

95. Time of day, location
etc all factor in to a reasoned response. An armed response is always the LAST response. Even when you can LEGALLY kill a person ETHICS should come to play.

The poster was inside, he was outside. An old man with a shotgun pointed in the air during the day is not going to trigger an armed response from me.

Calling police is reasonable. But I live in the country and people shooting during the day does not freak me out.

The fact the poster walked up to him pretty much underscores the nature of the situation.

Secondly, he was not pointing a shotgun in the air when I saw him. Like I said several times, there was no way of knowing what he was doing when I found him. I heard 4 blasts, and when I found him, he was walking around the barns with a shotgun by his side.

Why did I walk up to him? Because I was pissed. If that makes me stupid, so be it.

He's old, and that may be part of why I didn't feel threatened. If he was my age, I wouldn't have been so quick to confront him.

104. you did nothing wrong
I am not so much concerned about the situation you mentioned (probably a good thing to have the police called) as the other posters response to what you described.

My point is that your actions diffused or calmed the situation where bringing a weapon in could escalate it.

Especially when you have someone who may be intoxicated.

I am all about calling police. Depending how rural you are killing birds could be more serious than discharging a firearm.

Bottom line it that it is rude to fire weapon near a persons home without notifying them. Even where I am, where what you describe is perfectly legal.

boy you are full of a lot of shit at the moment aren't you...

Do you think there is anything you can possibly tell me about the use of an AR-15 I do not already know?

Self defense in a house maybe, but in case you are reading deficient, the shotgun shooter (yes, there was another gun that WAS fired...) was OUTSIDE, BEYOND the RANGE of a SHOTGUN or a PISTOL...which is only about 25-30 yards at the most, unless using slugs...

not 00 Buckshot...

Secondly, the most effective weapon in ANY defense situation is the weapon you are most comfortable with, for me, due to my YEARS in the Marine Corps, that just so happens to be an AR-15/M-16, especially outside...

Thirdly, Offense would be the only reason I would go get it and bring it outside, into the line of fire and whoever was shooting the shotgun off.

now, is there anything else your woefully deficient self would like to try and tell me?

edit: lastly, there was no way to know if anyone was in danger until outside, in the potential line of fire of a shotgun...

You maybe need to re-read and re-consider...

86. Ar-15, not so much M16Ax or M4
and plenty of other shit that has an M in the name, yeah I know a little bit.

First an AR15 is the same as your issued weapon in the same way a sport bike replica is the same as a moto gp race bike.

I have zero use for a replica rifle that is deficient in a civilian configuration. It is overpriced, underpowered, and not as effective as many other rifles available.

I developed a hatred for automatic weapons and hearing damage working in an NG armory. I can time an M2, I am comfortable with small arms used by the US Army.

The Colt weapon has VERY few parts that will interchange into a COLT civi AR. This is by design. Even so we did lock them up to prevent them being stolen. I assure you if I handed you an M16A3 (you know the one that retained full auto) and AR15 you could not turn the AR into a select fire weapon. Given an A4 (3round) you would give up and use the end result as a club. You cant just swap the lowers, trigger grou, auto sears, etc. The ar DIAS is no where to be found in the US arsenal.

How's that for a start?

Secondly, during basic infantry (depending on your age) used an A3,4 or M4 rifle. The burst makes that weapon far more effective at hitting a moving target (given you know basics and recoil characteristics ) than a single shot AR. Hitting moving things, especially things that may be shooting at you, with a rifle (more so a semi auto) is difficult.

Lastly the effective rage of 00 buckshot against a person is between 50 and 60 yards. That is plenty of space to DEFEND yourself. The shotgun is the most effective tool you have. Offense is illegal. You can only shoot in defense of your life or others.

that we simply dont have here.

here is all you need to know:

JGD is in her home watching baseball.

outside, close by her home she hears 2 shotgun blasts.

now, you need to act without ANY OTHER information. What do you do?

What kind of situation is that? Would you consider that to be an immediate defensive situation?

What did you learn in your infantry training about how to respond to that sort of immediate defensive situation?

Would you arm yourself before walking outside to assess the situation?

101. Two mindsets
much of what you learned in boot or any other combat training may NOT be usable or applicable.

Threat assessment is useful but the framework you use in rural NJ and bosnia are very different. Knowing what you are walking into before you take the first step is critical.

I learned NOTHING about self defense in boot. I did serve with leo's in the NG and learned more from bullshitting with them then any training.

Common sense and calm are critical to a potential problem. Calm is good. You could tell the cops because they had a comfort level dealing with people and keeping a situation calm and diffused.

I would NOT walk out into a situation and would load a weapon in my home. Once I figured out it was an old man, I would call the cops.

They get paid to deal with assholes, I do not.

Thats just me.

A few of the people who live all year round in Cape May Courthouse and the Villas. Never really harmful if left alone  they simply had that aura about them. You kinda kept a distance. Every place has people that don't take to outsiders, so you let them be.

Going up Rt. 47 from Cape May takes you through some very rural areas, that have been that way for the better part of 3 centuries. Middle and Lower Townships are dotted with lots that have only a house and maybe a garage or barn on them. Set back. Private. Shielded as well as gilded by trees. Beautiful. :)

49. Hate to say this but unless you own the property..........
Pigeons are pests, at least to that farmer. He has every right to eliminate them. Maybe it would have been better to use poison but personally, I would rather be shot to death than die from poison ingestion.

I personally would never harm an animal unless it was a direct threat to myself or my critters OR if the animal was being raised for my consumption. If I did feel a need to kill the animal it would be done as quickly as possible with as little stress on the animal as possible. (aka shotgun blast)

52. Uh....
Pigeons are BIRDS. How are they pests? Who are they harming? What - he can't hose his tractor off? It's easier to just whip out a shotgun and start shooting?

New Jersey has strict laws against the capturing, harming and killing of pigeons. He's lucky I didn't get the cops on his ass. And I still haven't ruled that out.

Also....this farmer is not the owner of the property. He leases the barns from the same people I rent from.

He had no right....I talked to my landlord and she will be looking into this. He had no right to come onto this property, unnanounced with a shotgun....and start blasting into the air while I'm sitting inside eating my dinner.

Crows are birds & they are shot on a regular basis in rural areas. Pigeons are often referred to as "rats with wings".

I don't like to see any animal killed. I just spent 3,000 dollars on fencing off an area for my dogs so I wouldn't have to kill some of the local coyotes. My dogs were on the invisible fence but that doesn't stop a coyote from approaching. I feel good about the decision despite the expenditure.

54. No...
your statement makes no sense at all. I live here with JGD, and while we don't own the property, neither does the wirey old redneck tractor man. He rents space in the barns to store old tractors - that's it. I spent time with this old fuck and his (also redneck) son yesterday as they repaired a hole in one of the barn doors. Problem solved, right? So why the need to appear on the property on a Friday night - unannounced - with a shotgun and start blasting shit? We have children and pets here, too - not to mention that the property owners are none too happy about this either. Oh, and then there's the issue of it being illegal to kill pigeons here, as it's also illegal to discharge a firearm.

Only Charlton Heston or Cletus from Deliverance Hollow would have thought this was somehow a normal thing to be doing.

58. We use the big plastic owls on our shop and
tractor sheds on our 'redneck' farm. That said, it ain't a habit peculiar only to farm dwelling 'rednecks'. I work for one of the biggest chemical companies world wide and after working with the Federal Wildlife Commission for 3 years in attempts to keep the pigeons out of the 'drum shelter' (lotsa bad stuff in 55 gal drums), the Wildlife people started shooting them with pellet guns. This was after trying the netting, painting the beams with the stuff that makes their feet hot when they roost on it (the just fly down to the drainage ditch and wash it off) and many other methods. Even the plastic owls.

59. You sound as if I'm I'm labeling all farmer and rural dwellers
as being "rednecks". That's simply not the case.

I don't know if you read the whole thread, but this man rents two barns here on the property. He does not own them, nor does he have any right to use firearms on the property. I rent a house on the same property, where I also have two young boys and two dogs.

He shows up here at dinnertime; doesn't warn me of what he's about to do. He knows I have children. He knows that NJ State law does not allow the use of firearms except during hunting season, and on property designated for firearms use.

It's also against NJ State law to capture, harm and kill pigeons.

As for your situation, it sounds like you had tried every alternative to keep the pigeons away from something highly dangerous. You used pellet guns as a last resort. That isn't the case here. He just realized YESTERDAY that the pigeons had found their way into the barns, got pissed off that there was bird shit on his precious tractors, and decided to just show up here with a shotgun today and start blasting away - with a house less than 100 feet away, a housing development of McMansions down the road, with the possibility of children playing in their yards. You know, civilization.

That level of intellect is, in fact, REDNECK. Sorry.

call the Wildlife Resources Commission in your area and report him for hunting in a residential area. Or call the cops and file a complaint.

I look as redneck as a slur, geographical racism if you will. I will not refer to a white farmer as redneck, just like I would not refer to an African American as a ghetto dweller. It is stereotyping based an race, geography, and culture.

That level of intellect is self-righteous asshole, not Redneck.

Nobody said that all white farmers are rednecks. I'm white. I live on a farm. I'm from Illinois. My grandparents were farmers. I need no lessons on stereotypes. Being a redneck isn't dependent on occupation, it's a reflection of a yahoo attitude. If you don't like that, take it up with Foxworthy and Larry the cable guy. They're revered by legions of self-proclaimed rednecks. Again, this shotgun-happy, 3500 Silverado-drivin', "shootin me sum pigeons" yahoo is a redneck - while the 3rd generation farming family we rent from are not. And yes, the next appearance of a shotgun here will result in police (sorry to those who would prefer my personal response with a flame-thrower or grenade launcher ;-) )

69. citizen_jane.....
I didn't mean to offend you by my usage of the term "redneck". Maybe we have different opinions of how the term is used?

I don't know where you're from originally, but I see that you live in North Carolina. I'm a Jersey girl, born and raised - been here my whole life. Even though Jersey has been largely regarded as being home to "yankees" "liberals" and "swamp rats", the state motto is "The Garden State". South Jersey (where I'm from) has quite a bit of farm area (although dwindling through the years).

Having said that....one of my childhood friends had farmers for parents, and I spent many a weekend at their house, riding their tractors and collecting eggs from the henhouse. My grandparents and great-grandparents were all Depression-era, WWII survivors, who grew huge vegetable gardens and orchards, and raised chickens on their properties. And now, I'm actually living on a farm where the land is being used for vegetable crops - 150 acres worth. I see the farmers all the time - and they're basically a bunch of nice old men just making their living.

I spoke to my landlord last night....her parents were farmers (her parents have since passed away). Even SHE was upset at what happened, and couldn't believe this man was out here UNLAWFULLY with a shotgun, shooting pigeons? I'm trying to remember her exact words, but it was something like "My dad never did things like that, and neither did my grandfather. And as far as I know, none of the neighboring farmers. What the hell is he thinking?"

EXACTLY.

I'm not labeling a group of people because of their occupation, citizen_jane. A "redneck" is, at least around here, a person who has this mentality of "If it's in your way, shoot it. Yee-haw! God Bless America! Sarah Palin rocks!"

I don't like guns - and I don't like hunting; but I don't think of hunters or gun-owners as being "rednecks". I don't regard the entire contingent of southerners as being "rednecks", although I know many people who have told me dozens of "redneck" stories from their experiences living in the deep south.

"Redneck" is a MENTALITY to me. That is all. :)

As for the pigeons, I keep going outside and clapping at them to make them fly away, but they keep coming back.

Some of our wonderful clients threatened to come up to our house - all by itself in a wooded area - and do us both physical harm. My wife is a nice Jewish girl from Philly whose entire houshold was anti-gun from birth. I bought a used .357 revolver and taught her to shoot. She loved it, now (15 years later) has an old S&W .38 Special police revolver in a big purse.
Was a great place in its way, but to far from conveniences for us now.

107. I can't believe that.
I heard a gun going off outside not twenty minutes ago... it sounded like somebody was target practising, except I live in the city. I heard it all the time when I lived in the woods. I HATE the sound!

109. I can see how it would startle you...
...but pest control is a normal part of farm operation. If it wasn't for those "fuckin' rednecks" the rest of us would not be eating very well.

111. Farm operation?
This isn't his fucking farm. He doesn't farm anything here. He stores old tractors in the barns - that's it. Not to mention that he'd already fixed the hole in the barn door that was allowing this horrific pigeon vs. rusty tractor dilemma. Sorry, but "normal farm operations" don't include indiscriminate unannounced shotgun blasts at pigeons on property you don't even own or live on. What's next... dynamite blasting the groundhog holes for sport? :eyes:

As I mentioned earlier, I know quite well the farm culture. It just seems that anytime something is postd that includes a mention of guns, the Charlton Hestons and Ted Nugents come out of the woodwork to defend the right to blast away at anything at any time.

I do wonder, though, if this crazy old tractor guy's wife can field dress a pigeon? :7

120. Well, I do, of course.
He's up for reelection next month. If he wins, I get to keep my job and health insurance. I'm pretty sure he will win. He's a D. of course.

Actually my defensiveness comes from the fact that this is a liberal website with many critics of private firearm use and ownership and I own quite a few and shoot them at the range regularly.
