It's the most horrible thing I have ever smelled. Holy God I didn't think it would smell this bad but it's awful awful awful AWFUL.
We're going to try the peroxide/baking soda mixture to was her. Will it work?

4. "skunk off"
I think I bought it at Petsmart or the vet. Works great!

My kitty Mac has been sprayed twice. Really, really vile.

6. Do NOT get her wet....
it locks the musk into their fur.

Best thing is a skunk odor neutralizer found in the pet section.

13. yes!
this is the correct answer
lock the dog outside - it will be better in the morning and then go get neutralizer from the pet store. DO NOT GET SKUNK SPRAY WET!!!!

8. The peroxide/baking soda thing SHOULD work, but:
Do it twice, and PLEASE be careful around her face and ears with it if you need to wash that part of her.

10. Traditionally you use tomato juice
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 08:13 PM by LibertyLover
You can also get an enzyme wash at the pet store that neutralizes skunk. I can't think of the name of it right now, but the pet store will know. Yeah, it sucks when the dog gets hit by a skunk. Good luck. One of my German Shepherds got sprayed right in the face. For months afterwards whenever it rained and his muzzle got wet, the skunky odor was perceptable. But he was fine. No injury to his eyes.

12. Yes, but add soap.
entire bottle of hydrogen peroxide
a fourth of a cup of baking soda (or vinegar)
about a teaspoon of the dish soap

Mix well, lather dog, rinse forever... makes your hands feel weird but works reasonably well. We had our dog sleep in the entryway for a night, and by the next day he could be back in the house. Good luck!

14. Clothes pins on the nose work
Or you could wad paper towels up and shove them up your nostrils. That will prevent you from smelling. As for tasting.....

16. I got this formula from a Vet's office:
1 cup hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
2 tsp Dawn Dish Detergent

Add water, if needed to make this mixture the consistency of shampoo.

Previously, I have used Skunk Off with outstanding results, but as others have advised, keep the dog dry for a good while after its bath. Water reawakens the skunk fragrance - big time!

17. tomato juice.
Wash her in that then her regular dog shampoo. IT works. I used to groom dogs. I had to deal with about 5 dogs a week who got skunked, along with the Atlanta Braves.

18. FWIW
As ghastly as the smell is for you, imagine how the fucking dog feels right now. Her sense of smell is a hundred times more sensitive than ours. She'll be smelling ode de skunk for months to come.

One and only benefit from all this, unless she's box of rocks stupid, she'll never play triple dog dare ya with a skunk again. If she even suspects one is around, she'll break the land speed record getting back home.

19. I've never heard of that breed of dog? What does a "Fucking dog" look like?
Edited on Mon Oct-13-08 08:47 AM by wartrace
I did an image search & all I could find was this type although it is called a "big fucking dog";

I have had great luck with the peroxide solution you mentioned. I have found that a smart dog will only get sprayed once or twice before they figure out that skunks aren't worth the hassle.

:wow:

I've never seen a dog quite THAT big. I've seen Great Danes that are really really tall, but never have I seen one taller than a grown man. :wow:

21. My dog used to get skunked all the time.
The peroxide/dish soap/baking soda treatment worked well for us. Her hair is medium length, and the tomato sauce wasn't able to penetrate at all.
To rid your house of the smell, boil some vinegar on the stove for awhile.

Good luck!
