Look What I Made! (total brag alert)
I have been crocheting for a few years, but never got brave enough to go beyond anything square/rectangular and no fancy stitches ever.

I found a pattern for a scarf that I thought I could maybe pull off. I actually went into the whole thing not expecting perfection, like I usually do. As I got going on it, it looked just like the pattern!! :bounce: I am absolutely beaming with pride as I sit here looking at it. It's a gift for my best friend's birthday. Luna is her favorite HP character and pink her favorite color. I think she is going to love it!

So, here is my finished creation. It is a replica of Luna Lovegood's scarf from the Harry Potter movies.

Here is the picture of Luna's scarf. Its' a different color, but the pattern is the same.

I totally RAWK!!!!! :headbang:

8. I know!!
Who-da thunk it? :wow:

Thanks, sweetie. And it was so much easier than I thought! It only took me two evenings to finish it, and that's mostly because I ran out of yarn.

That's what happens when the cat decides he wants to "help" :eyes:

9. Crochet was one of the few "womanly skills"
I was taught when I was growing up. Due to an unfortunate zipper incident, mother gave up on teaching me to use a sewing machine and we quickly moved on to crochet in order to avert additional injuries.

10. I have a sewing machine...
that's never been out of the box. I'm totally freaked out by it because I'm POSITIVE that it will try to eat my fingers.

I bought some knitting needles. We'll see how that goes after I finish the other scarves I'm making. :scared:

but I don't do it well or often. I took my mother at her word when she suggested, re: my lack of sewing/knitting/crochet skills, "You're gonna be shopping for all of your clothing, so we'll focus on your education and career options."

I was shown how to thread the damn thing about a dozen times and I still can't get it right. I'm embarassed to admit I still don't know, so I haven't asked again!

27. If you ever want to try again, check out YouTube.
There are 335 videos when I search "thread a sewing machine".

I used YouTube when making the scarf to learn how to do one of the stitches. The nice thing is that if one video isn't clear for you, there are hundreds more and one is bound to explain it clearly enough to understand. Hopefully. I can be really thick sometimes.

42. Why does it have to be so complicated?
I can slip a shiny round thing into a slot and get beautiful music. Why do I have to go through 100 steps to thread a needle? You'd think that somebody out there would have a simpler way of doing it by now. (Maybe the guy who created that very sucky vacuum cleaner)?

I've got 3 blankets going for Christmas presents.

Besides making a great homemade present, once they get big enough, they keep you warm while you're working on them... great way to save on heating costs.

I wish I had skills like those. And you are so thoughtful to make that for your friend, hand made gifts are the best. She will LOVE it!

My fav gift ever is a scarf my youngest niece knit for me when she was about nine. It is "rainbow" colored and "goes with" nothing I own, but I wear it with everything anyway. :)

32. Awww.
I love it!

If you haven't read Emerson's essay on Gifts, it's quite good.

http://www.blupete.com/Literature/Essays/Best/EmersonGifts.htm

"Rings and other jewels are not gifts, but apologies for gifts. The only gift is a portion of thyself. Thou must bleed for me. Therefore the poet brings his poem; the shepherd, his lamb; the farmer, corn; the miner, a gem; the sailor, coral and shells; the painter, his picture; the girl, a handkerchief of her own sewing. This is right and pleasing, for it restores society in so far to the primary basis, when a man's biography is conveyed in his gift, and every man's wealth is an index of his merit. But it is a cold, lifeless business when you go to the shops to buy me something, which does not represent your life and talent, but a goldsmith's. This is fib for kings, and rich men who represent kings, and a false state of property, to make presents of gold and silver stuffs, as a kind of symbolical sin-offering, or payment of black mail."

39. It's not too tough to learn.
There are tons of tutorials on YouTube that teach crocheting. You should totally do it! That would be awesome.

And I'm sure that someone, somewhere has crocheted a baby wrap. There's probably a free pattern out there for it, too.

Post pictures if you ever decide to take it up.
