Some people are just )(*&%ing nuts.
I went to a Subway for lunch today. While I was waiting in line, I noticed that a woman a few places ahead of me in line was slowly getting louder and louder, and it took me a minute to realize it but she was just plain yelling at one of the employees. At first I thought that no one actually acts up like that in public, she must be a friend or employee off duty just screwing with him, pretending to complain about everything. But no. She was serious. She was just slowly getting louder and louder to the point where she was literally yelling at the guy. Turns out he didn't change his plastic gloves before he started making her sandwich. And the minute she complained, he let someone else (with clean gloves, of course) take over and he switched places to go work the cash register. So he'd been trying to placate this woman from the beginning, the moment she complained. But that wasn't enough for her. Apparently that's a major crime, because all of a sudden she says, "I know when this place closes at night, and I have a lot of brothers and guy friends."

There was just a big pause and the guy said, rather incredulously, "Are you threatening me? Was that a threat?"

"Yes." she said.

... she was threatening to have this guy beaten up because he forgot to change his gloves before touching her sandwich. Nevermind the fact that the only thing he'd touched with them before was... another sandwich. He hadn't blown his nose or gone to the bathroom with them on. And she was threatening him with physical violence and accusing him of 'making people sick' and calling him all kinds of nasty names.

Needless to say, he told her to leave. She tried to go for an "I'll leave when I damn well feel like it" attitude, but I think at that point everyone in the place was staring at her so she ran off, muttering threats under her breath.

Ironically, the next two girls in line... were the owner's daughters. So they immediately called their dad and let him know what his employee had just been through (and been threatened with).

Still... you just have to wonder about the sanity of some people.

The right to shoot myself rather than get caught in the crossfire here. :P

17. What you described is pretty extreme....
but I see something in that general area of :wtf: at least a few times per month.

Last week, it was some woman who didn't like the baking potatoes that were out in the bin, and screamed and bitched until they brought out 10 more crates for her to pick through. There was NOTHING wrong with the potatoes in the bin- they looked exactly the same as the ones she finally picked.

the week before, it was a complete and utter BETCH at a local burrito place (build your own- like Subway, only burritos). But after she was done with the employees she made the mistake of turning her bitchiness towards other patrons. My group sat outside (pretty day) and she and her friend (unfortunately) sat next to us. One of my friends had her infant with her, and he was making typical "happy baby" noises. Not screeches or screams or crying, by ANY stretch- just the coos and such that are pretty darn cute. Plus, it was outside- lots of ambient noise around anyway (traffic, etc...). This chick turns towards us and says to no one in particular (but loud enough for the 20 or so people on the patio to hear), "People who can't control their children should just stay at home." (we were all- "OMG, did she really just say that?") My reply was also a general announcement to all on the patio, "Let's put it to a vote, shall we? All those who want the baby to leave- show your hands. (none raised) Now, all those who want the whining bitch to leave- show your hands." Almost everybody on the patio raised their hands. She and her friend beat a hasty (albeit huffy) retreat.

21. Yeah, I think that was pretty much the attitude of the other patrons there...
we just wanted the crazy lady to get the (*&% out of there before she turned on someone else.

3. Germaphobe most likely.
To the point of mental illness. I know a few germaphobes who aren't QUITE that bad...but I've heard some stories about others....

Either way... obviously SOMETHING wasn't quite right upstairs.

7. It really sucks when people act like that.
I've been threatened at my job a few times in the last few months. Once so blatantly that security called the cops to have the man evicted from the hotel. I sure was looking over my shoulder a lot for a few weeks after that.

8. Yeah, if I were him I'd double-check outside before I left that night
and call the cops to ask for a safe escort if anyone suspicious looking was hanging out there. She might not have been crazy enough to go through with her threat... but then again, she might have been.

9. I have noticed a lot of whacked-out behavior lately.
Some totally aggressive, but more just... weird.

I blame prescription drugs! People pop that shit like candy.

10. actually it sounds like this person NEEDS medication..

as in mentally ill..there are a lot of mentally ill running around without treatment cause they can't afford it.
I'm on prescription drugs (anti-depressants amoung others for a blood condition) and they are a LIFE CHANGER for me.
BTW, many homeless are also untreated mentally ill. With prices the way they are less people can afford the meds they need to function.
And I have yet to meet anyone who "pops prescriptions like candy".

11. I'm not talking about antidepressants.
I'm talking about Oxycontin, Vicodin, and the like -- uppers combined with downers, etc. Paxil doesn't make people go wacky in the Subway.

People take this stuff and go out on the street -- or into their right-wing radio studio! You're kidding yourself if you think abuse of prescription drugs isn't a problem.

13. Trust me on this
Its the UNTREATED mentally ill that are a FAR WORSE problem than the abuse of painkillers. The above behavior sounds like OCD or even paranoid schizophrenia. Untreated mental illness is the silent epidemic in this country.

12. He touched MEAT with those gloves
And I'm a vegetarian! Of course I was pissed!!

:grr:

Ok, it wasn't me, but I did make a subway sandwich maker change her gloves right after making a meat sandwich once. I was very nice about it, but she looked at me like I had three heads. Heh. I don't do that anymore. I've mellowed over the years.

14. I have been feeling some very weirded-out vibes since late last week
I wondered if the stock market crash on Friday was the main factor, but then I looked up and sure enough-FULL MOON! LOL- these things are for real, folks. There is some serious wigging going on and the moon's effects probably spill over a day or so.

16. Full moon, Mercury retrograde, and an accelerating Shift
Lots of mitigating factors messing with people's brains these days. Some other astrological stuff I don't understand is in the mix too, according to folks in the know in the astro forum.

15. Woah.
Where is it written that a food worker has to change his gloves after every sandwich? It's not like he's a nurse or something.

Damn, I would have loved to see her reaction if she'd been in my shoes at this pizza place a few years ago--I went in to pick up a couple of subs, and it turned out the guy was in the middle of making my meatball sub when I came in. He left it on the back counter, rang me up, took my money, made change, and then went back to making my sub...all while wearing the same pair of gloves.

No, I didn't go off on him, but I did speak up--something to the effect of "Dude. You just handled money with those gloves."

He couldn't figure out what I was talking about. I had to explain it a couple of times. After a few minutes he ventured, "...You want me to make you another one?" But by that time I realized that I'd probably eaten a dozen subs made the same way, so I'd gotten all the germs I was gonna get from that place. And it hadn't killed me.

I don't understand threatening retail workers--I always make a point of being massively nice to them. But then again, that's probably because I've spent plenty of time on the OTHER side of the counter. :P

19. Yeah, there are some times when that kind of near-sociopathy can only be explained
by the fact that these people honestly don't understand what it's like to be on the other end.
