They moved down here because it was hard to find a year-round job.
You'd probably need to get a car with AWD at least, unless you were living on a road that gets plowed real frequently. Seems like everybody up there has a Subaru or an SUV.

(And yeah, my mom said I could take the Element. The last time she said she wanted me to take her car, she called me every day for a year and a half to bitch at me about how I had her car. When I said I would trade her back, she said "No, you need a reliable car if you're living in the mountains." This discussion happened every night for a year and a half I tells ya. :banghead: )

I've been halfassed thinking about getting one when the Unkillable Wagon finally gives out, because most of the newer wagons seem to run small and I need the shit-hauling room and enough space in the backseat for my gigantic kid.
My Dad wants me to get a hybrid Escape, but I'm not sure the premium's worth the small increase in MPG in that particular case, and I'm generally kinda leery of smaller Fords.
