Post your favorite rock band. If they suck, I will inform you that they suck and tell you why.
Edited on Thu Nov-13-08 11:14 AM by PeterU
If they don't, I will simply offer a mere "They cool."

Edit: If I have not heard of your favorite band, I will merely give you a snarky remark as to that effect.

1. Oingo Boingo
Sans Weird Science.

The Specials are up there, as well, but they're mostly Ska, which everyone hates.

I love Oingo Boingo. Sucks that Danny's a scientologist, but his soundtracks are still wonderful.

Danny is an atheist. In fact, Danny's spoken out against them on more than one occasion.

Speaking of his brother, did you see the movie the guy made in college? Danny did the soundtrack. It's frickin weird.

26. I'm such a geek
I went to the re-release of Forbidden Zone at some old theater in Los Angeles 4 years ago or so. Anyhow, as luck would have it, Richard Elfman sat right next to us. And I kept trying to hold in my laughing at the movie because I was completely shitfaced and my breathe probably smelled like a still.

I don't really remember too much of the actual viewing of the movie, itself. I high fived Richard when there was a scene with alot of boobies. Oh, and Mark Mothersbaugh from Devo showed up and leaned over my passed out friend to shake Richards hand. Funny thing was, the kid passed out was probably the biggest Devo fan I've ever met and when I told him that Mark basically leaned all over him to shake hands, he didn't believe it. That'll teach you to hold your liquor.

what a story!

I can't believe you've actually seen it... that's a movie I always force others to watch and then they look at me like I'm insane. Well, most do. A couple liked it. :)

www.forbiddenzonethemovie.com

I haven't seen it yet. I hear good things and the process was done by a couple guys from Mystery Science Theater 3000, which gives it instant street cred.

I do have a ten inch record worth a few grand that has a version of the title song that was never released.

Jesus, I'm a bigger geek than I thought.

As did they!

Just got my Box Set for the era yesterday, and finally, after waiting 10 years, got to hear the Jackson tape this morning.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... :)

Anyway, easily the best band EVER

The sad part is that the older I get, the more I like newer Genesis as well, the stuff I started with in the 80's and then made fun of in the late 90's. I'm back to enjoying. Sh*t, I even bought a couple Phil Collins albums last month.

156. yes, seriously
before "jumped the shark" came into common parlance, that was our 1-word summation of anyone who sold out their art for money. they "Duked" it. for awhile, Phil Collins represented all that was wrong with music to us. now i could care less about a division of art & commerce. Phil is/was a monster drummer, and i still haul out the Brand X vinyl to enjoy that.

we liked Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and didn't like what came after. we were teenage snobs. we used to listen to Einstein on the Beach.

159. Hee hee "Duked it"!
I like it!

I always found "And then there were three" to be more of a commercial attempt than Duke, but I guess Duke was the first time it was really a "commercial success".

I can totally see where you're coming from.

I don't have any Brand X albums, but I've always wanted to try one out. Any advise on where to start?

probably "unorthodox behavior". honestly i don't listen to them that much so i don't know the records that well - & i get unceasing complaints from my kids about any 70's jazz/rock fusion.

177. Good point, I meant to say "post Hackett" album!
Of the Hackett/Gabriel free albums, most hardcore fans I know like Wind and Wuthering better, but I really prefer A Trick of the Tail. Squonk is one of the greatest songs they've done since Pete left, even better live.

136. Now you like Radiohead best?
Shows some damned good taste!

Radiohead an the Flaming Lips are my recent era favorites. They never disappoint. It's so nice to listen to a group and wonder how much *BETTER* their next album is going to be than their last. For most of the bands I've liked, it's always been the opposite.

I can't seem to stay interested in many bands anymore. Genesis sort of fell by the wayside cause there was nothing new coming out. I still love their stuff, but there's nothing new, so I have moved on. I think everything Thom touches is gold and never skip any tracks on any CDs... been that way since Pablo Honey. :)

I seem to get weirder and weirder too. I like a lot of music, but I only really seem to care about stuff that strikes me as new and different... Radiohead, Thom's solo stuff, Sunset Rubdown, Andrew Bird, Mogwai... as a result it's hard to find new stuff I'm really excited about. Which is kind of a bummer. :P

147. No, I missed it! Bummer. I did catch him as guest DJ on Morning Becomes Ecclectic yesterday, though
He's such an up type of guy, and it's sooo cool that he's so psyched about Obama.

I used to be a real "stuck in the past" kinda music guy. It was my philosophy that if the band was formed after I was born, it sucked. I've changed a lot since then, though, both "bad" and "good". I never really got into the grunge bit in the 90's, and didn't get into Radiohead (beyond Creep) until I heard Kid-A, which totally knocked my socks off. It's still my favorite album of theirs by far, though In Rainbows I thought was moving things forward again.

I've also found myself listening to and really enjoying a lot of 80's pop! Like Duran Duran! Ooooh, how the snobby have fallen. Granted it's mostly at the gym, but still.

I haven't listened to any of Thom's solo stuff, so I'll give that a shot, and try out the other bands you mentioned that I haven't yet. I'm totally interested in listening to anything new and seeing if it catches my ear - particularly when suggested by someone with such good taste!

Edited on Thu Nov-13-08 06:55 PM by redqueen
That's just me though. I'm kind of a superfan... Thom can do no wrong IMO.

As for the bands... they're an acquired taste. All of them have a few different styles of music, so you might want to try a few, or I can suggest some. For Sunset Rubdown, I'd suggest Stadiums and Shrines and I'm Sorry I Sang on Your Hands That Have Been in the Grave... and also A Day In The Graveyard... and maybe For The Pier (Dead Shimmering). For Mogwai, Take Me Somewhere Nice and Glasgow Mega Snake (one is soft, the other hard). For Andrew Bird, Imitosis and Plasticities, maybe. I'm not sure about Plasticities. Definitely Imitosis though. Happy listening. :)

Lady, when you're with me I'm smiling
Give me all your love
Your hands build me up when I'm sinking
Touch me and my troubles all fade
Lady, from the moment I saw you
Standing all alone
You gave all the love that I needed
So shy, like a child who has grown

'Cause you're my lady of the morning
Love shines in your eyes
Sparkling, clear, and lovely
You're my lady

Lady, turns me on when I'm lonely
Give me all your charm
Evenings when she lays down beside me
She takes me gently into her arms

Lady of the morning
Love shines in your eyes
Sparkling, clear, and lovely
You're my lady

Lady of the morning
Love shines in your eyes
Sparkling, clear, and lovely
You're my ... lady

162. You are clearly a FAUX music nerd.....
REAL music nerds PRETEND to have heard of a band when they haven't. That's because they can't bear the thought of someone knowing they hadn't heard of a band.

If you inform me that they suck, I will tell you that you suck, and why--although the why will of course be that you think Tull sucks. :D
