Oregon mom jailed for using kids in volleyball scheme

Associated Press

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) -- A Medford woman is going to jail and must pay restitution for sending her children door to door seeking donations for a trip to a volleyball camp.

Carley Torres will have to spend up to 90 days in jail and pay back more than $3,000 after pleading guilty to theft charges.

The 35-year-old Torres and her 33-year-old husband, Laramie Torres, sent their children through neighborhoods in Medford, Ashland and Eagle Point last year to ask for donations to send their oldest daughter to a volleyball camp.

But the couple instead spent the money on shopping mall trips, monster truck rallies and weekends at the movies.

1. She probably sent them out in her own neighborhood.
She should have driven across town or something.

2. Ha. The Midlets have never gone door to door.
I don't believe in it. Even for Girl Scout Cookies.

It offends the shit out of me when kids go door to door.

6. It ticks me off because when they were little, I bought from everyone
who came to the door and then I realized when TM was in Kindergarten and needed to sell wrapping paper, that there was no one for her to sell to.

So, I sucked it up and bought it myself.

I strongly feel if you want your kid in soccer, or band, or whatever, pony up the cash. The band kids came around here the other day and I was like :wtf:

TM's show choir costs were in the THOUSANDS, but she never asked for a handout. If we didn't have the cash to do it, she wouldn't have done it.

this month. Too many sports banquets and such.
