I was given an entire room full of computer parts and stuff. |
|
A client/friend had a brother who was a computer repair geek. He suddenly passed away about a year ago, leaving behind a considerable collection of computer stuff. It was sitting there in their mother's house, taking up space. She offered to GIVE it all to me if I wanted to pack it up and haul it away.
So now it's taking up all the space in MY living room while I sort through it. A good part of it will end up in the dumpster, but some of it is great- so far two new Intel mobos with chips and memory, plus an old TRS 386 mobo, still boxed, but some capacitors have leaked over the years in storage. Plus all kinds of other cool stuff I haven't discovered yet within the chaos.
This is fun, but just a bit morbid- one day someone will be going through MY collection in exactly the same way, sorting the junk of my life to find a few bits of good stuff.
Such is life.

2. Years ago I was given a bunch of stuff that had belonged to a magican many decades before |
|
He had died only recently, but he'd retired years earlier. I went through the whole inventory, and I was the first person to have examined it in probably 30 years.
Very little of the stuff was useful anymore, since it had been stored carelessly and had degraded. And most of what was still in working order was entirely unimpressive--tricks sort of like what you'd find in a $3.00 magic kit at Toys-R-Us.
However, there was one cannister that caught my eye. Blue with red end-caps. A friend was sitting nearby while I worked at the thing; I could tell that it was supposed to come apart, but the wood had warped, and the metal fittings had rusted, so it was a bit of a challenge.
At last the cap came loose, and I jumped about three feet when the pair of ancient cloth-and-spring snakes jumped out at me.
I couldn't believe that I'd fallen for what was actually and literally a very old joke. The cannister had been waiting since before my birth to surprise some hapless investigator, so I took a certain satisfaction in knowing that The Great Claire had fooled one last audience.
Such is life!
