Any other DUers who may be going through a quarter life crisis? |
|
I don't want to sound like a whiner. But it seems that one day my confidence is there, the next it's gone. I worry about the smallest little things to the point where it drives me nuts. It's got me scared, I really think I may have some kind of disorder. But then other parts of me say, just chill it'll go away and you'll be yourself again. It's been happening for about two years now...no end in sight.
I've heard about quarter life crisis and I think this may just be what I'm going through. I obsess about my problems. And it seems my whole world can be turned around in a split second over something small.
I never used to be this way. I can't figure it out. Has anyone got any insight into this? Did any of the older folks ever go through this during their mid-twenties? Is it just part of growing up? Maybe my brain is just in the middle of re-vamping....

1. I'm going through that right now |

1/3'rd life crisis, though I don't expect to be alive in a year.
I've just decided to live with it rather than to analyze it; I fear of what I might discover. :-( :scared:

I'm still trying to figure out if you are joking or not.
If not, keep chillin' and enjoy the rest of your 20s. Your 30s will be better, and after that you'll wish you were in your 20s again.
Or, I'll trade you my midlife body and you'll be looking backwards at your glory days!

I enjoy my 20s alot, but when I'm not out having fun, I get into this mood where I think too much.

It's not a 20s thing; it's a lifelong affliction.

6. Well,,,,,,, are you saying you are about 25 years old? |
|
That wouldn't be quite old enough to be going through what astrologers call the Saturn return. (eek, yes, I am speaking about astrology -- in the lounge, no less).
But...if you are around 28-30 y.o.......then the saturn return would be relevant. Here's a little excerpt from a discussion thread from another board ..... just for interest's sake.
**you oughta see if the astrologers in the meeting room will take a look at your chart. I would bet dollars to donuts that you have a uranus transit taking place. Uranus can bring on anxiety and free-flight attitudes that kind of waft in and out unexpectedly..... (if that makes any sense).
Here's the excerpt:
at around age 28 - 29, you hit your first Saturn return. That is the final astro rite of passage into adulthood. A major life changes will occur....marriage, divorce, having a child, buying a home, taking on a very respnsible job, etc. Now at that age, most people are starting to come out of the whole thing of everything in life being a damn big deal. The big deal about everything in life is the young to mid-20's, then you start to settle in.
**doesn't seem to be what you are describing, so I will answer your question. No, at 25 I did not have any ups and downs to speak of. I just simply started to orient myself for that period when I hit 28/29 -- just started to sort of think about life as an ADULT for the first time.
Whatever it is...some yoga and good nutrition and other grounding/balancing activities would seem to do a world of good if you are feeling all "see-saw-ee"........

I've heard that many people suffer because we are brought up with the whole you're either a succes or failure idea. But the thing is, I am not a failure, I do well for a guy my age. ARRGH!

15. It's a disillusionment thing |
|
I'm 27 and I've been experiencing similar problems. I think it comes from fully growing out of your child self and all the pressures that come with adulthood.
I was the eternal optimist when I was younger. It's tough not to feel disappointed sometimes, ya know what I mean? Is this it? I'm not nearly as successful as I thought I'd be.
Good to know I'm not the only one!

Not to worry. This is a good thing. You need a little edge in your life to keep sharp (no pun intended). I am 57 and I remember the restlessness, the cat on a hot tin roof feeling. Think of it this way: you have your whole life and a great life before you. Take a deep breath, consider the good things in your life, get rid of the bad and relax. I'm glad I'm the age I am but I'd love to go back to your age with the knoweldge and experience I have now. Take what you have and use it! :-) Also, be thankful... I had a good friend with two little girls who passed away from breat cancer at your age...'nough said!

10. not exactly a quarter-life crisis |
|
But I will finish my education in half a year - and so I have to choose: get a staff job at the University and do a doctorate or go out there and find a *real* job. Meaning: the safe and careless days are about to end; what's next? Where will I end up? In what city/nation will I find a job? ... the insecurity and the possibilities.

I am 25 too. I know that I am still growing and everything just seems so out of control with the thought that "I could be in better control if I just were more (fill in the blank). I've had a hard time adjusting to adulthood. I didn't have that great of a childhood but college was wonderful and I felt that I had developed into a decent and somewhat confident person. Then I graduated, had a hard time finding a job, got married, living in a community far away from where I grew up, losing contact with college friends, got an alright job that is just horrible for my self esteem (working fast food was much better for my self esteem). I know that I am still growing, but I worry that I'll be like this for the rest of my life. I have anxiety disorders which I developed after college. I worry about everything and know that I am very limited by my fears. I have developed a fear that I am going to die because I don't want to die a faliure and feel that if I were to die now that my life would have been a waste. My counselor who I have been afraid to see for a year said that many young adults go through this sort of crisis, but that society does not prepare them for it. Yeah, I am a bit moody too and go through a roller coaster on my self esteem. I hope that we'll all get better.
