Poll question: Best concert movie EVER (the poll) |
|
Ok, took nominations yesterday. Can you believe nobody said Rattle & Hum? (kidding) Got a couple movies each from the Stones and Neil Young (actually 3 for the Stones). I suspect that Gimme Shelter is better known, but Ladies & Gentlemen... got more love, so on the ballot it goes. As ever, feel free to take advantage of the ever-popular Other option and reply function to register other opinions.
Note to gmoney: Yes, The Unheard Music is among my favorite films, especially D J Bonebrake's alarming demonstration of how he plays different tempos with each limb. However, I don't think it quite makes the cut as a concert film. (Then again, I haven't seen many of the nominees below, so some of them may be even less concert-oriented. Oh well)

Although the image quality is not perfect, the audio is extraordinary. This is Jimi Hendrix at his very best. Besides that, I was in the audience, sitting in the front row. I have been wowed for my entire life ever since that 1970 event.

All I can say is WOW! I am SOOOOO jealous of that fact you got to see one of the Master's shows - totally awesome. I like the film a lot, though I would love to see an uncut version. I recently picked up 'Blue Wild Angel' and for my $, its the best Hendrix video I have seen (notwithstanding the audio problems that plagued the show). Woodstock is good too, but there again, I would love to see the full show, not the edited version that includes the edited songs, such as Voodoo Chile (though painful to the ears, I want to see that little bit with Larry Lee and Jimi playing back and forth towards the end of the song).
Speaking of Jimi, another good (though short) one is the Dick Cavett gigs. 'Isabella' rocks on that one.
Anyhow, lucky you is all I can say! :)

3. I had to go with Last Waltz. . . |
|
Just because it's such a fantastic performance and film.
Simon and Garfunkel: Concert in Central Park would be another favorite of mine.
I'd also have to put The Grateful Dead Movie at the very top of my list :)

12. I was at the Concert in Central Park |

The experience summed up: "What? Are they playing? What did he say?" Still pretty neato, though.
Was also at Live Aid and one of the first Who farewell tours, where the PAs were a little better.

Also: Monterey Pop (Both available from Criterion)
By the way, as a movie The Song Remains the Same is absolutely horrible. However, the concert footage redeems it, somewhat. Now, for true Zep fans, pick up the double-DVD called simply Led Zeppelin. It has rare footage from everything from early TV show appearances to their final concert at Knebworth in '79. It's truly amazing to see footage from '72 and footage from '79. Only seven years had passed, yet they were a totally different looking and sounding band.

Fantastic film. I can still feel the thump of Waters' bass from the jam in Echoes. That movie is sooooo underrated.

Absolutely. Janis and Jimi were better there than Woodstock. The Who were on fire! And Otis. What a tragedy.
The Criterion box set is amazing! I encourage everybody to check it out.

14. I haven't yet seen the re-release but Monterey is my choice |

:bounce:
It edges out Woodstock and Gimme Shelter. But I liked the non-performance footage better. Mama Cass with her mouth wide open watching Jimy Hendrix or the psychodelic bus, which I think belonged to Judy Carne of Laugh-In fame.

11. As a "movie" Woodstock is far superior |
|
But Woodstock isn't just a concert on video, there are other things on it. A "rockumentary" of the whole Woodstock Experience.
Now let's make a different category: Concerts on video. And in this category, some of my favorites are:
Iron Maiden - Maiden England Rush - A Show of Hands (Rush in Rio is excellent, but I think the Show of Hands may be a bit better) Billy Joel - Live in Yankee Stadium Genesis - The Mama Tour

Not as good as Woodstock but certainly worth mentioning.
