6. I got my first CD player Christmas 1991...
it was a little boom box and thus began my love affair with music. I think my first 2 CDs that I bought for myself with some Christmas money must have been "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen and "Achtung Baby" by U2...I'd say I was the only 8 year old on the block with that in my CD collection

31. Um, I think See Emily Play was a Pink Floyd song
Edited on Tue Nov-25-08 03:55 PM by walldude
actually I know it was.. did the Hollies do a cover?

Is this the song?

Emily tries but misunderstands
She's often inclined to borrow somebody's dreams 'till tomorrow

There is no other day
Let's try it another way
You'll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See emily play

Soon after dark emily cries
Gazing at trees in sorrow hardly a sound 'till tomorrow

There is no other day
Let's try it another way
You'll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See emily play

Put on a gown that touches the ground
Float on a river for ever and ever
Emily

There is no other day
Let's try it another way
You'll lose your mind and play
Free games for may
See emily play

78. You are right - This Hollies album was about 1964 before Floyd was begun...
Edited on Wed Nov-26-08 10:42 AM by old mark
Can't remember the name of the thing now, but the song "Bus Stop" was on it, and a young lad named Graham Nash was still in the band.

Let me find the info on this and I will add it later.
Sorry - my brain is as old as the rest of me, and has taken some abose in the past.... ('60's, ya know...)
Thanks.
The song I was thinking of was "Look Through Any Window", and the year was 1965. How I goe "Emily" out of this, I Can't Explain (The Who, 1965)
Thanks for making me look, though - found some interesting stuff on Wikipedia.

30. Sgt Pepper was my first.
Edited on Tue Nov-25-08 03:56 PM by walldude
Years after it was released. My second was Elton John's Captain Fantastic. My third was Dark Side of the Moon, and I bought two copies and still have one in the wrapper, I assume it has the posters and stickers and all.

You know I remember just how wonderful it was when a new album I wanted was released. I remember the smell of the vinyl when I opened the package and I remember sitting down with my turntable and huge bulky headphones and listening to the album from start to finish while reading the lyrics, liner notes and credits. Nowdays with the exception of Tool bands don't seem to care about the cover art much, and I can't think of a single album released in the last 10 years that I loved every track on. Thank god the internet has started to break the grip on corporate music.

One more thing, funny when CD's came out my first 3 CD purchases were, SgtPepper, Dark Side and Captain Fantastic. Go figure.

43. Freak Out!
I was 7 and I think my allowance had just gone up to $5 (the average cost of LPs in 1965). I hopped on my Stingray and pedaled downtown to blow my wad and was thrilled to get a double album for my money. I think my second one was Country Joe and the Fish. I was really too young to really do the '60s right, but thankfully had older siblings who were the best of bad influences. My folks should probably get credit for letting me run amok, as well.

66. My first records were 6 45's out of the Ben Franklin Basement
store . . . . lessee if I can remember them:
--Here comes that rainy day feeling again -- The fortunes
--Timothy -- the Buoys
--Joy to the World -- Three Dog Night
dang I'm not remembering them all . . . .

My first Big Record was Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline from the Salvation Army for ten cents. He became my favorite singer for years to come. The other was Tommy James and the Shondells Greatest Hits -- bought brand spanking new at the local record store!

Back to First 45's
-- something by the Grass Roots -- was it Temptation Eyes?
-- something with a yellow-orange label by the Guess Who to which the flip side was "Broken" and I did love that song.

Funny how you think you'll never forget but then you do.

77. Metallica - Ride the Lightning and Black Sabbath- Paranoid.
Both were vinyl. But Metallica's Kill 'Em All was the first album I ever owned. It was a gift from a friend's older brother who got it free at a Metallica show in San Fran. The band used to hurl free albums into the crowd and Rich managed to get three of them.

Imagine that. Metallica used to distribute recordings of their stuff for free. Oh the irony.

Glass Houses (Billy Joel) & Grand Illusion (Styx)... both were LP's. I was in eight grade(?), and thought I was just too cool for school because I was listening to "adult" rock (or so I thought...)

I love my LP collection!

CD's spelled the end of cover art. <sigh>

Edited on Thu Nov-27-08 06:46 AM by OhioBlues
I went to the store in Spencer Iowa and spent 99 cents. That one was "What's new Pussycat" by Tom Jones. I think the next was "Ballad of the Green Beret's" by SSgt Barry Sadler. I was a sentimental little kid and I would cry because so much of my world was about the Vietnam War - it was the least I thought I could do.

edited to add in case you've never heard of that song - you tube has it.

104. Cream: Wheels Of Fire Miles Davis: Bitches Brew
I was 12 and knew about Cream from my older next door neighbor. I heard Sunshine of Your Love and wanted that record. I bought Wheels, thinking that album had the song i wanted. I didn't regret it.

My 6th grade history teacher talked about Miles and told me that i should listen to it since i was a jazz piano player. Since i had heard of Miles from my piano coach, i figured that seemed a good idea.

So, i bought both of them on the same day at Goldblatt's.

I got rid of my LP's a few years back, but i saved both of those.
