Overplayed as (*&%. But that's because it's good.

As a violinist who's had to play it a few hundred times, I think I'll pass on listening to it again though... :P

A true and tragic story told in the movie "Hilary and Jackie".

And I was lucky enough to see the real Jacqueline du Pre perform this piece with the Houston Symphony in about 1968.

35. Jehan Alain's "Litanies"
performed by his sister Marie-Claire. Mme. Alain is one of the greatest living French organists, and her gripping ride through one of her late brother's most famous pieces is jaw-dropping. Jehan Alain was shot by the Nazis while on a motorcycle patrol in WW2, cutting short the life of an intensely creative genius. Yet another reason to freaking hate Nazis, Illinois or not!

38. Glenn Gould performing Bach's Art of the Fugue Contrapunctus XIV
Intended to be a quadruple fugue of four themes in four voices.

He was at the point in the piece of introducing a countersubject based on notes that spelled out his name B A C H (Bb A C B) when he suffered a stroke, leaving it unfinished.

The abrupt ending is chilling.

52. Ahhhh, That Is Beautiful
I heard Horowitz play in Milwaukee when i was a teenager. In those days, he only played recitals, and only on Sunday afternoons. The clip of the Poloniase looks like it was from when he returned to Moscow after 50 years. I think there was a Sunday morning special on it, hosted by Charles Kuralt I think. I recorded it, and I borrowed it to someone who didn't return it. Hey, I wonder if I could purhchase that somewhere?

55. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, specifically 4, 5 & 6: Sir Neville Marriner:
Academy of St. Martin in the Fields - only. I love the others too, but these are favorites.

Non di scordar di me, sung by Luciano Pavarotti, by Curtis, conducted by Mancini

Tchaikovsky's Concerto in D major (only because it was composed for my great-great uncle, Leopold Auer, though I've never heard it I'm still partial to it) and much of the Nutcracker Suite I find magical and fresh again and again.

Mahler can bring me to tears, but I can't name anything specific.

One I can exclude is Vivaldi (temporarily) I got way too burned out on his work. It won't last.

There are too many.
