I'm going to the gun store, anyone need anything?
I am driving down to Georgia in a little while & the route takes me past a large gun store. I am stopping by to see if this "run on guns" is reality or just hype. This particular store is heavy on semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15 types so it should be a good place to see whats up. They even sell machine guns there.(woo hoo!)

Personally I don't need anything. I'm good:)

At least they won't call them "panties" like they did to poor Ned in deliverence........

I just watched that movie in HD last month. I will NEVER venture out into the wild without "protection".

12. You sure you don't want a barrel?
I live within walking distance of the Dickel distillery & probably 25 miles from Jack's place. I have always thought of those two places as my "emergency supply" in case times get tough. I could walk down to Dickel & barter for what I need!

31. Dang, I wish I had seen your post before I left the house.
I passed by not ONE but TWO "Big Daddy's fireworks superstores". They sell everything from sparklers to those huge mortar shells. A couple of months ago they had a fire up at a Murfreesboro,TN. fireworks store & the fire dept had to let it burn due to the stuff going off. The paper said it drew quite a crowd of spectators.

20. Well, I got there & the doors were locked.
Locked doors on a Saturday afternoon? No big deal to me, it wasn't out of my way but I am now curious as to what is going on.

I then drove up to Swanee (University of the south) & over Monteagle mountain into south Pittsburg, TN then across the river into Georgia.

30. Suggestion.
If you want a "first gun" I would suggest either a pump action shotgun or a .38 caliber revolver depending on what you want it for. If it is for home security I would suggest the shotgun. If you will eventually get a permit to carry I suggest the revolver. I think Smith & Wesson makes the best revolver & there are numerous shotguns that would fit the bill. Check out the S&W "airlight"

The reason I suggest a revolver is that 1) They are a LOT safer than a semi-automatic. When you pull the magazine from a semi you STILL have one in the chamber unless you clear it. Revolvers are easier to verify. 2) The always fire. Semi's sometimes have feeding problems.

I know this is not necessary to say but I would be negligent if I failed to say it. You MUST get some training on the firearm. Some people buy one, shoot a box of ammo out of it & figure they're good to go. Also, if you go for the shotgun see if you can fire a few different gauges to see what is the most comfortable for you.

41. I disagree if it is to be a "starter" gun.
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 09:54 PM by wartrace
Revolvers are foolproof, the go bang every time you pull the trigger. The 1911 is a close second but you must also know how to clear the weapon if it fails to feed. Reliability is the MOST important thing for a carry gun.

With all that being said I carry a 1911 Kimber pro-carry II

I have it running perfectly with my choice of defensive rounds. I KNOW it will go bang every time. Most people who buy a semi automatic handgun for self defense do NOT spend enough time or shoot enough rounds to KNOW their firearm will always fire. You need to fire at least 500 rounds of the ammunition you plan on using in order to confirm reliability. If you aren't willing to make that commitment then a revolver is your best choice. It will ALWAYS fire when you need it to fire.

I would also like to suggest an ammunition company, this is the only ammunition I load in my carry gun.

Check out the ballistic gelatin photographs. I have a couple hundred rounds of .45acp plus a hundred rounds I use in my rifle (.308) for predators around the farm. It puts down a coyote instantly. I would never consider anything less, if you are going to shoot something it shouldn't suffer.

49. Ask in the Gungeon, is my advice
If you're looking for a self-defense piece. Or ask in Outdoor Life Group if you want recreational gun advice.

Lots of knowledgeable people in both of those places, and they generally stay on topic.

(Hard to go wrong with a 4"-barreled Ruger GP100, though!)

43. I have a 500 "cruiser" model. I keep it by the front door.
Handy little shotgun. It's cheap & reliable. Seeing as I live in a rural area it is a better bet than calling 911 & hoping they can SEND me a guy who has a mossberg 500 in his patrol car. I think the criminals know this as I rarely hear about a deadly home invasion robbery on a rural home. It is a given that every home has a firearm, it is unwise to commit a crime when the occupants are at home.

47. I live in a small duplex.
The Mossberg is right beside my bed in case I'm ever awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of breaking glass.

I hope the sound made by racking a shell into the chamber would be enough to make an intruder crap themselves and flee as fast as possible, but I've got double aught buckshot in the mag if it doesn't.

Seriously, a buddy of mine bought like 50 pounds of it and gave me ten pounds of it. I have no idea why I have it but it is sitting in a closet collecting dust.

BTW- if the kids won't stay off your lawn you should get a dog like "Moe" he looks sweet but he is unsocialized and cranky.

39. I learned yesterday
That its getting hard to find an AK in California. That was my wakeup call, and I will say no more, other than to say some people are GD dumb, and untill that call I was unaware that there were any Felons in the family.

I wish I had seen this coming. Would be kinda fun to have been smart enough to buy stupid guns 3 years ago on the cheap, and be able to sell them to stupid people now at a markup.

Then again, I would probably be smart enough not to sell stupid people guns. So perhaps its better that I didn't anticipate this.

I buy "lifelong" firearms, I will own them until the day I die. I would NEVER buy a gun with the intention of selling it later for a profit. Yes, people buying now at the inflated prices are idiots. I bought this gun in July, it is now listed at 200 dollars over my cost;

Good news is that there's no background check, so it doesn't matter if you're batshit crazy or a convicted serial killer. In fact, that decsription might fit the guy who sells you the weapon.
