Sonic BOOM
This afternoon we experienced a strange "KA-THUMP" noise, which rattled the walls of the house, as if a wrecking ball had hit the side. I thought maybe a bookcase upstairs had fallen over. I went around the place, checking everything out. The ground wasn't moving, so it wasn't a tremblor... so what the hell?

Turns out the shuttle landed at Edwards Air Force base, and it caused a rare sonic boom across southern CA. These were common when I was a kid, but have all but vanished these days. They will get your attention. :-)

1. I live in Florida, and even when I know the shuttle is landing
the sonic boom scares the poop outta me.

4. Yeah, I still remember my first time.
I moved to FL at the tail end of 1st grade. If any happened over my first summer there, I probably thought it was just nearby thunder or something. But the first time it happened when the skies were completely clear I just about jumped outta my seat. :P

2. We used to hear them all the time in the sixties
F-102s from the local SAC base.

3. I heard it here in Manhattan Beach.
It was the classic double sonic boom. I told the kids the shuttle must be landing at Edwards A.F.B., and sure enough we watched the taped landing on the news.

5. I heard that double boom and immediately told CA I thought it must be the shuttle.
Had no idea they were bringing it in at Edwards today!

One of these days, I want to go out and watch it land.

6. It was a late decision
Their back-up plan, so I don't know what kind of window of time you would have had... but yeah! I would love to see it land. (My sister did see the very first shuttle launch, Columbia in 1981, and I got a T-shirt out of the deal, lol).

Enjoy your noble fir, by the way! One thing I miss about Christmas in the northwest - you could go to a tree farm and cut down one of your own. Nothing beats the smell of a freshly cut evergreen in the house. :hi:
