4. My dear KitchenWitch... |
|
That's pretty normal for a moderate earthquake...
I doubt that there was any significant damage or harm to humans, etc.

6. Stupid question really....from someone on the east coast who only deals with blizzards |
|
and the like...do you ever get used to earthquakes? What I mean is when one occurs, do you just shrug it off like nothing ever happened or do people ever freak out when there is a significant tremor?
I ask because I can't imagine the earth moving below me and having the feeling of being shaken around

7. It's not a stupid question |
|
A blizzard would probably freak me out, as would temperatures below 30. :scared:
Yeah, you get used to quakes, especially minor ones. I live three miles from the Calaveras Fault and about 10 from the San Andreas, and we have several tiny quakes (below 3.0) every month, but you don't feel those unless they're virtually right underneath you. A more significant shake gets your attention, but it's still like, "Hmm, good one," and you go on with what you were doing.
Of course, the reaction changes depending on magnitude and proximity. Also, there're different kinds of quakes — some "roll," some "bounce" and some just shake. A shaker or bouncer feels more violent than a roller of the same magnitude.
The thing is, 99 percent of quakes are small and they're over almost before you know they're happening. There're no weather reports to build up anxiety, so you really don't think much about 'em until one happens.

10. That's pretty much what I've heard from friends who have visited there |
|
but not lived there....thank you for the input.
Because, you see I really want to go out to California ( before I die...just to say I've been there ) and I thought if that happened I would be too freaked out by it, but by your reasoning it's something that would not be a traumatizing experience ( even from someone experiencing it from out of state )

It's not a stupid question, not at all!
It feels more like being in a car on a bumpy road...
I've never experienced a truly HUGE earthquake, but they do happen. Then the buildings fall down, and all hell breaks loose.
You do get used to them!
I've lived in CA since I was 13, and I got used to them a long time ago...
Most of them aren't very big or very scary.
It's almost fun...once you realize that you're OK and your house didn't fall down!
And remember, most of them last maybe between 10 and 30 seconds...
Then it's over!

11. Thanks Peggy...I heard most of them don't last that long |
|
I suppose if they lasted longer than an hour then perhaps you should be worried! :D

9. I'm an east coaster who's been here 10 years and I'm used to them |
|
They're actually kinda neat when they're around a 5.5 - big enough to feel but not big enough to cause lots of damage and injury. It's an amazing thing to feel the earth shift underneath you.
But like the others said, most of 'em are just little things and you might feel a little wiggle and that's about it. I find I have to regularly straighten the pictures on my walls because the movements that I don't really feel tend to move them in small increments.

17. I suppose I would be freaked out by them the first time I experience them |
|
but with blizzards...yeah, they can paralyze a city and all, but snow melts; it doesn't make buildings crumble and shit shake around, and yeah people die from them if they are not given proper shelter from the cold. Living in an area like that I suppose you get used to the earthquakes. The reason I asked this is because I always wanted to go to California ( don't know why, I just do ) and if I were ever out there and that happened I'm not sure how I would react, so I was just curious.
Just goes to show no matter where you live in the U.S we all have our battles with Mother Nature....and most of the time, we lose them! :-)

13. Having only moved here two years ago - earthquakes freak me the hell out. |
|
I can handle tornadoes, blizzards, severe thunderstorms, and any kind of midwestern severe weather phenomenon.
I cannot handle earthquakes, wildfires or mudslides.

25. I could watch that movie over and over again and relate to the acid trips ( to an extent ) |
|
but I never had a taste of the "ether" they were so fond of there. The hotel scene was so horrific yet so appropriate to the times and the situation...this movie, in my opinion is a masterpiece. The pineal gland inducing drug Johnny Depp took that freaked him out so much, you remember that scene? With Benecio Del'Toro looking like the devil while he was talking him through it......oh, god.

26. I mostly remember the book |

I consider the film to be a bit of a travesty and I even have it on DVD. I love Gilliam and think that he did a great job, as good as humanly possible, but it's just not quite the same as reading HST's words.

Why are the initial reports always like .3 to .5 higher than the final report?
