Poll question: Favorite "acquired taste" voiced singer
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 09:47 AM by PeterU
Because I think there are some who get a bad rap because they don't sound like every other Eddie Vedder clone out there.

Edit: Added Tom Waits

1. Desmond Dekker
He sings so high, I had trouble having my ear adjust to his wailing... Now I get chills when I hear the opening bars to The Israelites.

I just didn't get the feel of it off the bat. Trust me, I think few love Desmond more than I. I was lucky enough to see him a few months before he passed. Here's a picture:

23. Yeah, I love his voice.
Didn't really take any acquiring though.

Dylan's voice is very over-criticized too. Yeah, it's nasal and at times just wanders around in the vicinity of the pitch he's shooting for, but his rhythm and cadence are better than all but the best of rappers, and it just has a lot of soul and character.

7. Yeah. Took me about 20 years to like the guy.
"Bone Machine" landed in my lap one day and I found myself drawn to it.

honorable mention to Bruuuuce, who used to irritate me with more than just his voice, but (after hearing "Magic") has become someone I not just admire but genuinely enjoy.

15. A message from EarlG:
This is just a note to let everyone know that CreekDog's account has been suspended. His incessant anti-Geddism has infected this board for too long. He will be allowed back on after writing a 4-page essay on which Rush album is the greatest. Until then, he will be subjected to wedgies every afternoon at 2:30.

8. Paul Buchanan of The Blue Nile
The first time I heard his voice I thought, "couldn't they have done better than him."

By the time I heard the album for the 3rd time, it occurred to me that, no, indeed, they could not have.

19. Bon Scott
First time I ever heard an Ac/Dc record, I was like "what the Hell??". But I got over it quick. And it helped that my parents really hated Ac/Dc

Ironically enough, Bon's previous work with Fraternity had far more annoying vocals than anything he did with Angus & Malcolm.....

I never thought of it back when my friends all played the Cure. Then I listened to then for a while the other day, it was an old tape we found boxed up, and his voice got on my nerves for the first time.

Must be my age.

43. It was Paradise that first led me to him
I am, or really should say was, a performer also.
And funny thing is, like so many young girls of my time, I had a teeny-bopper crush on John Denver. It was his cover of "Paradise" that led me to John Prine, and I'll forever be grateful to him for that, even though I outgrew Denver's music. (Although he was a fine songwriter in his own right -- not necessarily the most commercial of his songs, however.)

Bob Dylan and Michael Stipe also have great "acquired taste" voices. Billy Corgan's nasal whine was better in the past when mixed with the older production.

Should I allow this just so I can ask him to sing "Chocolate Jesus" to me?
