A lament for writing
Cross-posted at my blog

We are the last generation that will still write with style. Most generations that follow us will use less and less writing until it ceases totally. We won’t need your signature, as we will have encrypted credit cards that will pay for literally anything. We’re losing writing of heart filled I’s, happy face O’s, and even the beloved double t– not an h. No more squiggly B’s, G’s, P’s, S’s, and those J’s. No more horrible Z’s that look like stairs, or those stupid M’s that are really N’s. X. I think I loved you most.

Now, it’s lol. Then it’s rofl. Then it goes all sht. dat wz realy funE.

:(

(goddamn it. even the freaking smileys have been raped)

2. I'm part of those generations.
I have 2 young cousins in grade school, and they are bein taught to use computers primarily. I think the days of spending a whole year practicing cursive writing are over.

8. Child Abuse!
:P

Sure, kids may learn cursive these days, but its all out the window by middle school. I have mixed feelings about that. While it is nice to preserve our heritage, it is also important to provide kids with the necessary computer schools they will need to succeed.

12. My cursive skills went out the window when I learned manual drafting in 1979.
Printed lettering is what drafting is all about, both then and today with AutoCad. Other than my signature, I have almost completely forgotten how to write cursive, and, really, I don't miss it. Only in the last year have I finally been able to look away from the keyboard when I type ;)

And I don't get writer's cramp from typing :P

16. Yeah, I got it so I could paint more and use Photoshop easier.
It was an upgrade from the Graphire 4x5 I had used for about 6 years. It's expensive, but worth it :D

4. You're probably right...

7. Yeah, cuz fighting to free the slaves is horrible.
:P

I find the differences in school mascots to be striking: The jayhawk comes from the abolitionist forces, including the hero John Brown; 'tiger' was a nickname for the pro-slavery evildoers.

9. Not to get bogged down in the history of this but...
while the jayhawks were on the "right side," I think you'd be hard pressed to point to the "good guys" in the Missouri-Kansas border war. Both sides were pretty sick, as far as the atrocities they committed.

And I don't care about the historical jayhawks anyway! I care about the fact that the MOTHERF**ING KU JAYHAWKS BEAT MY FOOTBALL TEAM. With three losses, Mizzou could have still gone to a top bowl game. Instead, we're in the freakin' Alamo Bowl against Northwestern. :grr:

10. In any revolution, there must be bloodshed.
What the jayhawkers did was justified and ultimately right.

18. Do I believe it can be overlooked doing bad things for a higher good?
Yes. What the jayhawkers did was in retribution for the illegal and loathsome activities of ruffians. Our cause was just (abolition of slavery). Missouri's was not.

I understand. Ends justifies the means. What's a few raped women in the name of a good cause?
