Poll question: What do you think - Should I Say Something to my Co-worker or not? |
|
Edited on Wed Dec-10-08 06:48 PM by Mind_your_head
I work with this very very nice woman. Professional, good-at-what-she-does, friendly to everyone, etc. But I'm glad that I don't have to see her everyday because she at some point dyed her brown hair (with slight grey highlights ;-) ) blonde. Her hair has been growing out and it's got a GOOD 4-5 inches of the brown (with grey hightlights) with the bright blonde below it.
It looks REALLY REALLY AWFUL! It looks like she has a little brown cap on her head with frizzy blonde sticking out below.
She's constantly having to meet new clients and, as far as I know, no one has said anything - but they all would have to be thinking, "What's with your hair!"
If she went to a salon and had them color her whole head (or the blonde parts at least) back to her natural color that would be a far, far better thing than what she's got now.
I sat across from her at a meeting today and eveytime she spoke and I looked at her all I could think of was, "that hair is so awful". I don't know why it bothers me so, but it does.
So, what say you DU'ers....Should I say something or not? And if I say something, what would be the polite, tactful, and EFFECTIVE thing to say?

2. Sometimes when you are growing out the grey - you have to decide do |
|
I cut my hair short all over and let the dye grow out. Cause there is no way to replicate the grey streaks in your hair on the bottom half. So it would look bad whatever you do. I would mention it to her. Say like "oh - so you are growing out your hair. It is hard to know what to do with the dye line isn't it". That way you are stating it is about her directly but not being mean.

3. I think it would be appropriate to say something if you were a friend but not as a coworker |
|
OTOH, I'm the kind of person who tells people if they are walking around with a booger on their nose because I know I'd want someone to tell me asap.

5. I dunno. She sees herself in the mirror every day |
|
She knows what she looks like -- ya think? It sounds like her hair's long enough to just get a cut that cuts off the blonde, but if it doesn't occur to her that it needs to be done, well, I don't think telling her how awful she looks is going to make her do anything about it. She'll feel hurt, though.

8. And she may be trying to limit the damage... |
|
Sometimes more color or treatment makes the hair worse. It could be that she's just trying to grow it all out and suffering in the meantime. I don't think she thinks it looks good right now, but telling her would make it worse.

6. Perhaps you could start talking about your own hair ... |
|
that you are thinking of changing the style, cut, color...something/anything. Just ready for a change. Open up the conversation from this angle...see what happens.

7. That's a really good idea - thanks (seriously) |
|
I think maybe I just figured out WHY it bothers me so much when I see 'roots. It just *smells* of 'cheap'.

If so, tell her.
If not, don't mention it.
