She's remarkably unremarkable, except for that shovel attachment she calls her chin.
She has the most capable publicist in the world. That doesn't necessarily = hot.
Plus, OMG, could she be any more shallow?

22. She is the personification of overblown mediocrity. |
|
She is the Dire Straits of the non-music world.
She was part of a swollen ensemble cast in what was possibly the most over-rated TV production in history. Since then, she has been the most forgettable element in s mercifully brief string of forgettable films.
And she has somehow held the public's attention only by her associations with men, and as the third party in a completely fabricated and moronic love triangle manufactured entirely to sell glossy, overpriced grocery checkout gossip rags to simpletons.
If by hot you are referring to her looks alone, I suppose she is moderately attractive, but I see dozens of women every day who, strictly aesthetically speaking, put her to shame. I wouldn't look twice at her, and before you jump to conclusions, I assure you my standards are LOW. She has always been marketed has a completely benign, non-challenging entity. She is, by design, Not "too" anything, while being "just enough" something else. She is to humanity what beige flocked wallpaper is to houses, and what "Wonder" is to bread.

I imagine we all have our own, wholly personal opinions on what is or is not attractive, shallow, or ineffectual.
And I imagine there's a sub-set who would invalidly state those opinions as fact.
I also imagine there's a sub-sub-set who advertise those "facts" for no other reason than to illustrate their own sense of self-worth and cleverness.
Thanks goodness the latter category marginalize themselves and are quite rare-- possibly even non-existent on DU...

If she was just a non-famous someone you met somewhere you'd probably be very happy if she flirted with you and wanted to spend time with you.
But she's a celebrity, so she better look perfect and flawless or she's got a "shovel attachment" instead of a chin.
I really don't get the way so many guys put down famous women. :wtf:

Her looks aren't the entire basis of my opinion, but thanks for jumping to that conclusion.
Her looks are mediocre. I could get as upset about them as I could about, oh, I don't know, some mediocre thing. I mean, if not for the shovel, I am hard-pressed to even remember what she looks like.
Oh, wait, I remember. She looks like every paralegal in the world.

{Antioch College NewSpeak}You posted a thread about how visually hot she is, by your own admission. Hmm.... perpetuating the patriarchy by glorifying the objectification of women. Just because you happen to be the same gender as the subject, that doesn't make it any less sexist.{/Antioch College NewSpeak}

Generally, when guys get all bent out of shape and judgmental about women celebrities there are serious sexism issues going on.
No matter how the celebrity looks, bash her appearance. No matter how hard she works or how talented she is, bash her as untalented. Anything she achieved is somehow undeserved.
You compare her to Dire Straits as if that means you're not sexist, but you don't accuse them of being famous only because their PR people or who they sleep with. You don't criticize how they look.
You only criticize the men for lack of talent. The criticism of the woman has to spread beyond that to her looks, her relationships, and to whether or not other people are responsible for her fame.
Seems like obvious sexism to me.

If you don't like Jeniffer Aniston's acting I would think you would simply turn the channel. If you don't want to know about her life then don't read that particular tabloid. She's pretty easy to avoid and ignore.
Without some other issues going on here, there shouldn't be any reason for you to be so worked up into a snit.

I was going to post a bunch of Googled "paralegal" stock-photos, and that was one of the first ones that came up. And if you Google "medical office administrator" the same photo comes up there, too. I think she's leading a double life. I wonder how long it would take to find this photo under "stock image bank". Hmmm....
And before the usual pious group pipes-in, let me be the first to acknowledge that this is what advertisers and the like consider to be the archetypal "paralegal", whether that perception is based in reality or not. Perhaps this is both reflective and directive of how we perceive the "platonic ideal of paralegals" to be. And perhaps, just perhaps, this is precisely what I meant when I said "every paralegal in the world". Kind of a non-threatening, demure, reasonably pretty girl who is accommodating, eager, Caucasian, confident, cute and politely conversational while maintining a steady 50wpm rate, but not so intimidating you couldn't go out for a Zima with her after work, or who would feel out of place at an NHL game.
Maybe I'm smarter and less of a sexist than you thought.
Maybe I don't even give a shit about Jennifer Aniston, either. Maybe I just like stirring the pot on occasion, particularly when the pot often begs to be stirred.
Maybe.

You were in such a hurry to pile-on, you didn't read my thread. On a word proportion basis alone, I spent about 78% of the post cutting her up for everything *except* her looks.
She *should be* easy to avoid and ignore, but she's not. Just whan you thought it was safe to dip a toe in the pop-culture stew, up pops Aniston.
Even here.

The only trait of hers you mentioned was her chin.
And if you don't like her, why are you even in this thread. You really could have avoided her, even here. Yet you choose to follow her into this thread so you could complain that she's here.
What it boils down to is how dare any woman be famous on terms you don't like.
How dare any woman be famous and not be beautiful according to your exacting standards?
If this thread is any example, your snits are really petty and shallow. Hardly legend.

69. To be fair, the OP concentrates on Aniston's looks |
|
Edited on Fri Dec-12-08 02:22 AM by WildEyedLiberal
So it's a double-edged sword: if someone is going to assert that Aniston is "HOT" (thus reducing her to physical appearance), it doesn't seem a huge stretch that someone else will disagree.
If we really want to strike at the root of this alleged sexism, we can start with the GQ photo spread the OP posted. Oh look, Jennifer Aniston is naked and covering her naughty bits suggestively. :eyes: When was the last time we saw a completely naked A-list male celeb on a magazine cover, his bits artfully disguised by some prop or other - unless it's some schlubby guy like Seth Rogan or Jimmy Kimmel, whose nudity is clearly meant to be hilarious rather than provocative?

Stripping down women to promote ever new movie, tv show, car, gadget and game is sexist. The fact that women are judged based on whether or not they strip down, or whether or not people (men) would want them to strip down is sexist.
No argument from me there.
The OP was presenting a opinion of her appearance, whether anyone agrees or disagrees. It was an aesthetic opinion. Nothing more. The response brought in judgements of her talent, her career, her management of her career, etc. and wrapped those in with her appearance. Suddenly because she supposedly looks mediocre, somehow she now ACTS mediocre, and manages her career mediocre except that other people (more capable than her) manage it for her.
There is a huge difference between the simple aesthetic opinion of the OP and the judgments that followed.

72. I suppose that's true |
|
The OP didn't really invite value judgments of her acting and career. I tend to agree with most of Canuck's judgments, personally - not the "shovel chin" thing, that's unnecessary - but ironically, the only really relevant critique in light of the OP's focus on her looks. I think she's probably one of the most overrated "celebrities" out there, which has nothing to do with her gender. There are plenty of overrated, "why the hell are you famous anyway" male celebrities, God knows. But maybe a silly thread about how hot she is wasn't the place to air those judgments. I can't really get offended by anything in this thread, though - it just falls under the "random celebrity who is liked by some and stridently disliked by others" category. I think the exact same comments could have gone down had the subject been a male A-lister of dubious talent. Maybe it's not fair that she gets judged by her looks, but magazine spreads like the one pictured in the OP just perpetuate those judgments, rightly or wrongly.

102. As I skim this thread, I'm not seeing the "because" |
|
I'm seeing claims that she looks mediocre and is mediocre in those other areas. I suppose you're technically correct that "freakin' HOT" is an aesthetic judgment, but really it's at the same intellectual depth of as the criticisms that followed, just at the other end of the spectrum. It's all shallow, snarky, bantering, dissection (or support) of a public figure. So, I'm not seeing that difference you claim - the OP made a trivial (positive) comment about one aspect of JA, and it was followed by trivial (negative) comments about other aspects of her persona. There may be truth to the idea that female celebrities are treated differently, but this thread isn't evidence of it...
(FTR, I think she is well above mediocre in appearance, and not untalented in her chosen profession.)

55. She needs to move on from Brad. |
|
All this complaining about Brad and Angelina is just silly after so much time has passed. It seems as if she is desperate for attention. Posing nude is normally a sure sign that an actress wants some attention. But she also keeps bringing up her ex which she knows will be worth a few tabloid covers.
She is a decent comic actress and an attractive woman. But she is obviously on a PR blitz and I am tired of her "poor me that Angelina stole my husband" sch tick.

57. She answers questions that interviewers ask. |
|
Angelina recently came out and said they planned on conceiving Shiloh. Well, Brad was still married to Jennifer. She also said that it is neat that her kids will see the movie that their parents fell in love. Brad was still married to Jennifer and they weren't separated at the time. Interviewers ask her about it and she answered. She didn't bring it up herself. I would feel the same way if I were to find out that. Over my ex-husband or not. And she is promoting a movie. This isn't the first time she has done a shoot like this. Or the first time any actress has done a shoot like this while promoting a movie.
I think she is tired of being portrayed as the victim.

Surely she can figure out a way to answer the question that doesn't make her sound like she is obsessed. This is the third interview now where she has had something to say on the subject of her ex.
And I am sorry I disagree, the nude magazine cover just screams "desperate". Don't think I hate her. I have always enjoyed her work as an actress. But I find this PR campaign she has been on, starting with the Vogue magazine interview, has just been grating.

Obviously the men are the only ones who owe their gals anything, but it doesn't look good to me. And the fact that she went on and on about how she woudln't get with a married man yet admitted to falling in love on their movie and planning to conceive Shiloh all while Pitt was still married. I don't have much for him either.

Sweet, VERY down to earth (which sets her apart from so many other celebs here in LA), and funny. I think she's beautiful, and she's a good comedic actress. Watch some of the stuff she did before Friends for a look at her improv talents (e.g., Ben Stiller's sketch show).

109. Define "talent" because I don't see much there |
|
She has effectively played the same character for over a decade - be it on Friends (the most unfunny show ever on television), in Office Space, or romantic comedies with Vince Vaughn. I think she is highly over rated. She may well be a nice person, but I know lots of nice people in the world who are lucky to make rent.
I do think she epitomizes the very meaning of hypocrite; she condemns the papparazzi yet does photoshoots with GQ and answers candid questions only fit for a tabloid. She often says she wants a private life but then goes running to the press when she thinks her street value has diminished. And it always seems that poor Jennifer is getting a raw deal but she just keeps going at it because she's the every girl America adores. What a crock of shit. She's the victim and the aggressor all at once.
As for her physical attributes, they are what they are. Everyone has their own tastes. But for talent, I wouldn't hire her to be in a highschool production of Grease.

121. I never denied that Hollywood is often two faced |
|
I've done the music circuit on Sunset Strip for some years. I know how the publicity game is played.
But I'm also not going to excuse those who decide to play the media blitz and then pretend to be a victim of circumstance. Ms. Aniston should be climbing up the leg of the editors of the tabloids and kissing their collective ass for keeping her career alive. But instead she cries 'no fair' with her self initiated relationship with the press and chooses only to accept the positive while rejecting the negative that stardom brings.
Futhermore, to judge her on her acting merits (which we all do as movie watchers) makes me wonder further just what the hell is she bitching about? Sorry, I just don't really give a rats ass about her, attractive or not. And I have a hard time seeing rational people buying into what she's trying to sell.

that it was uncool for Angelina to be talking about stuff that happened when he was still married to Aniston and I agree. She also said it was taken out of context from what she actually said and was surprised because it was Vogue and they aren't known for being tabloid-ish. But never have I actually heard her try to be a victim and from what she says she hates being portrayed that way. She actually said that she is happy for Brad. So there is no woe is me going on.

When do two wrongs make a right? Furthermore, even when she was with Brad she would decry the press - wanting privacy and all that. By the looks of things, I'd say she's rethought her position on how the media is treating her because now she's telling all. Please. I'm sorry if I don't really give a shit.
All of that aside, the fact still stands that she's probably not going to win any Oscars any time soon. Sorry if I find it quite humorous she's crawling back to the press for adoration on her new project. The same press she supposedly lost her innocence to.

I mean, look, if someone is in love with her decade plus portrayal of Rachel Green and hopes to see more of the same character for the next 20 or 30 Aniston movies then you happen to be in luck. When she decides to stretch out in her chosen profession, it's to mixed reviews (which is puting it lightly) and rightfully so. She is the epitome of a one trick pony.
For me, I just don't see what the big deal is given the above scenario. She's an aging media spectacle and a mildly attractive movie star and nothing more. To which she should be quite happy with her success and one I'm not begrudging her. But it seems to me people are asking us to pretend that the bull didn't come with the shit when it did.

130. I have never seen her act/dance/sing/bloviate or whatever the hell else she does... |
|
...to entertain folks. I don't have an opinion one way or the other about those things. I'm not sure I've EVER seen her before, except in the OP pics.
I think they're hot. Damned right.
Excuse me-- um-- I need a moment alone....

137. This may be the most entertaining thread I've seen in months |
|
For what it's worth, I don't find Jennifer Aniston particularly attractive (I think she has a very masculine face - nice on a guy, not so great on a woman) and I think her acting leaves a great deal to be desired. It's really a mystery to me why she's all over every magazine cover out there but as has been stated elsewhere, she probably has a very good publicist.
What cracks me up though, is that one can't say any of that without being labeled sexist, or "jealous" (that one always slays me - so very third grade), or having some sort of obsessive fixation with celebrities in general and the one you're commenting on in particular. Oh, or being a "hater" (my other third grade level favorite).
I'm not sure why people get so protective of celebrities who probably don't give a rat's ass one way or another what you think (as long as you continue to keep them famous) but it's wonderful entertainment. Better than that provided by Aniston any day.

139. I speak up when people bash celebrities |
|
because of the double standard. They don't bash male celebrities the same way, and they hold the female celebrities to impossible standards.
If these guys met a woman in a bar who looked like Jennifer Aniston they'd be staring at her breasts and trying to buy her drinks, not complaining about some perceived flaw in her chin.
The sexism seems too obvious to be left without a comment.

141. I don't know - I think all celebrities are held to pretty ridiculous standards |
|
At the same time, they themselves play into it. Posing nude doing flirty things with a tie certainly doesn't do anything to alleviate the stereotypes after all. And while you can see it as sexism (and maybe it is) that some guy picks on her chin, the fact is that she's mostly famous for the way she looks and that is solely what the OP was talking about - looks. So why is it not sexist to post a suggestive nude photo and call her "hot", but it is to comment negatively on her looks? Why is one obvious sexism and the other isn't?

She just happens to be pretty cute to me. But most actresses are. That is Hollywood for you. If those were pics of me you better believe I'd be showing them off to y'all talking about how hot I looked! ;)

I really don't care if others think she is hot or not. I also don't think it is fair to say such ugly things about someone either. The chin being a shovel comment was mean.
I don't ever call people sexist either. I don't think there is anything wrong with posting a picture of anyone and saying they look good. I did say she is hot because I believe that is what the picture emits (on purpose). I did say that the paralegal comment was sexist because it kinda was. Intended or not.
This thread took on a life of its own. I do tend to take up for her because I like her. I think it is natural for someone to do that. People do it all of the time with their favorite bands, politicians, etc. I don't expect every one to love her, but some people here seem to downright hate her. I just don't get it I guess.

I don't mean to direct those comments at anyone in particular and people do like who they like. I probably like some celebrities who other people would be shocked about (and I would care no more than you do).
Just observations and enjoying the heck out of this thread which certainly did go to some fascinating places! :hi:
(Oh, and since I'm taking paralegal classes, that comment in particular cracked me up - I'm not sure if it was sexist but it was very strange :P )

143. I am profoundly offended when pictures that don't show nipples are called "naked" |

I consider it a sin and on principle I refuse to beat off to them.

as having a better personality than Jennifer A. IMO. I find personality most important when looking for a girlfriend.
