I'm concerned about going home
there has been absolutely no power on at my place all day. No heat... it's going to get cold tonight.

I don't know what to do.

1. Just your house or a black-out?
Anyway, can you crash somewhere else tonight?

2. power lines are down all over the county b/c of ice storm
I really don't know where I'd go. Not only that, but I have my son & his friend who live w/ me, and I don't know what to do w/ them either.

9. If you can't find another place to go, I'd get candles, and put them EVERYWHERE.
You can use a bag of tealights easily (and CAREFULLY!!!) and it might help. Or head to you local box store (I try to avoid WalMart, but desperate times call for desperate measures) and get a box of regular candles (or whatever scents are on sale...cinnamon will help it feel warmer) hope that helps.

10. County? I just looked at the on-line news and it's all over the North East !!
Whole states are practically without power and even courts are closing down. Stay safe all of you.

3. Can you get a hotel room?
Friend's house? Over here in N. Cal we have these Spare the Air days where people aren't allowed to burn wood. That's right...ole PG&E came up with a "we can't breath" scam and they even have a phone number where your neighbor can rat you out should you dare to burn wood and not pay for their electricity or gas. However, when there's a power failure you can bet people will use their wood stove. Thankfully, I don't live in the part of town where it's banned but I think the whole idea of not being able to burn wood is downright mean spirited. Good luck to you, I have being in a dark cold house.

6. I suppose I could
but I honestly don't have the money. If I knew it would be for only one night, I'd spring for it, but there's no telling how long it's going to take to get power.

Seriously, I'm beginning to worry about the food in my freezer... I hope I don't have to fill it all over again. There's at least a week's worth of meat/fish in there.

8. Can you put the food in an unheated porch or entryway?
If the problem is that it is cold out, you may as well use it to the extent you can.

Worse comes to worse, you could nap in the car with the engine idling.

4. I was completely oblivious to all this until my co-workers all showed up haggard and late
I guess the air off the ocean kept it warm enough where I am.

Hope everything works out!

7. Well, all I can suggest is wear clothes to bed and use a lot of blankets.
I suppose the furnace won't run without electricity. If your kitchen stove is gas, you can boost the ambient temperature by running the oven.

11. Are you close enough to come over here for the weekend?
Seriously, pack up your car and come here for the weekend. It's a few hours drive, but you're a welcome friend and I'd happily have you stay for a few days until your power is restored.

Bring your fur kids.
