Poll question: Which unfunny "classic cartoon" from the funny pages are you absolutely SICK of?
The newest of these came out nearly a quarter century before I was born!

1. Mark Trail.
Poor drawing, stupid story lines. One of the dumbest cartoons ever.

5. i think they have squeezed all the humor out of "Blondie"
however, if she were to get buck nekkid in the next strip, that may renew my interest....

7. I think Blondie can still be funny. I'd add Dennis the Menace to the list.

9. pretty much any hand me-down strips no longer by the original creators suck
Thank God the great Charles Schulz insisted in his contract that no one follow him on Peanuts.

Meanwhile, hacks like Jim Davis are already passing their strips off to others and signing their names to the finished product.

Dik Browne is maybe the worst offender. His spawn have kept the unfunny drivel of Hagar the Horrible and Hi and Lois going long after his passing.

And the fifth-generation no-talent running nancy right now is pretty bad. He's a rightwinger, too. Hannity has him on all the time to attack Aaron McGruder and Gary Trudeau. It's funny when Sean invites him on, that he always opens the segment by claiming he "loves Nancy." You need no further proof that Hannity's a liar.

No one loves Nancy.

12. What Berkeley Breathed (Opus/Bloom County) says on readership
S.F. Chronicle, October 27th, 2008

This Sunday marks the last day of Opus in the Sunday comics. He's not going on hiatus, as he did when the strip's author, Berkeley Breathed, yanked Bloom County in 1989. Fans got lucky five years ago, when the beloved, bewildered and politically beleaguered penguin returned to star in his eponymous strip, along with some of the Bloom County cast.

-snip-

Reached by phone at his home near Santa Barbara, Breathed said he had been thinking of ending the strip for a couple of years. After he brought Opus back in 2003, he noticed that his core audience - readers 13 to 30 - was no longer reading the newspaper. "It wasn't just that the market had shrunk and some readers had left," he said. "They had virtually disappeared.

"I hadn't appreciated that until I came back and realized that if I strolled into a college campus after three years of doing my strip, no one had ever read it. In fact they hadn't read anything, unless it was something from 25 years ago that their parents had given them the books of. So I already saw that the window was closing, that it was just a matter of a few years."

Amy Lago, comics editor at the Washington Post Writers Group, which syndicates Opus, said that in Bloom County's heyday, the strip was in 2,500 newspapers. Today, Opus is in "just under 200." She noted that newspaper readership in general is down, and "there's a perception that it's older readers who tend to subscribe."

Interesting read. Could help explain the current sad sate of affairs.

14. There's a lot of ground to cover here
but at least most of these aren't trying to be funny. Which doesn't reduce their suckage any--but it does remove them from contention for "worst shit ever."

That'd be the Family Circus--but everybody knew that.

15. I don't hate it, but they needed to retire Peanuts after Shultz died.
Don't get me wrong, it was a classic, and I love all the Peanuts holiday specials. But it's no longer new, and I don't see the need for them to keep publishing old strips and by doing so keeping out some funny new strips that I'd love to see our paper carry. "Pearls Before Swine", for example.

but mostly I'm just kicking this thread because it can never be said enough how bad "Family Circus" sucks.:P

I cannot believe they are still running that strip. It's been running for 40 years, and was never funny to begin with. It gives comic strips a bad name.
