Do you know someone who makes you embarrassed to be liberal/progressive/leftist? |
|
I do. I'll call her "Molly". Molly tends to bluster a lot on topics she doesn't know much about, such as the economy, gun control, energy. When she loses an argument (especially against a conservative) she tells her opponent to shut up and storms away.
How about you? Anyone else out there know a Molly or two?

Asshole named Justin. Looks and acts like the bad sides of Michael Moore without any of his better qualities or talent, and guaranteed to start an argument and then count on you to back him up when he starts losing.
You know he's a loser when someone starts naming some of those "to be a liberal, you have to believe..." and he can't defend himself against them.

5. Oh yeah. I think we all know people who operate the mouth before engaging the brain. |

I don't think it is peculiar to the left, either. I know a few conservatives that are just painful to watch. I see this one guy on a local board that is always going off about something or another and it is almost always something he misunderstood. His own party is sick of him...
In some ways, I think that whole character of the misinformed zealot is what made the old SNL sketch "Emily Litella" so funny.
"What's all this about Presidential Erections? I think that is just nobody's business except for maybe their wife. Why is it even something that people are talking about at all let alone being on TV night after night..."
"Emily, that would be Presidential ELECTIONS!"
"Oh, never mind..."

9. Many of them. Many liberals are just as extreme and closed minded as the right wingers |
|
The far right and the far left are just two sides of the same coin. My observation is that generally the more extreme one's views the less willing they are to accept that there can be valid alternatives to their own views. They are more like they are to demonize those that don't agree with them.
I fault the right wingers for seeing the world in black and white and all issues as simplistic. Yet the far left is pretty much does the same thing. I fault the far right for it's "do as I say, not as I do" attitude, yet the far left is just as guilty of this mind set.

10. The people whose idea of being a liberal/progressive is simply making potshots about religion. |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-07-09 09:49 AM by PeterU
Granted, there are a lot of reasons to criticize the way some conservatives exploit people's faith beliefs. But that doesn't mean the opposing liberal viewpoint is to belittle anyone and everyone who does have a sincere faith belief. And there's so, so much more to being a liberal than just the issues that one typically associates in part with religious beliefs.
Let's see who else. Maureen Dowd. Bill Maher. 9/11 conspiracy theorists. Sadly, although the show still has its hilarious moments, when Family Guy tries to enter into the world of political issues, it just seems overly preachy and too in-your-face.
