I read the entire Wikipedia article on Cat STEVENS because
his songs for Harold and Maude (today) were smashing, and I liked his music back then, AND

I always wondered why he converted to Islam.

O.K., so now I know he's very spiritual. I've gotta say I miss his POP persona, his TUNEFUL (like TCHAIKOVSKY) music. Maybe he can be DEEP and go off to explore other DEEPER dimensions, but why not leave something Cat for shallow people like me?!1

1. You haven't been paying attention then
He put out another CD a couple years ago as Yusef entitled "An Other Cup". It was quite good, and as melodic and tuneful as anything he did before his conversion.

If you really want to know about him, go to his web site (www.yusufislam.com) and read about his life, in his own words, including why he reverted to Islam, and also why he came back to make popular music 20+ years after he left the business. It's quite compelling reading.

2. No, I haven't been paying attention and I only want to know about him (or anybody)
when/ "it" happens, like today that I heard a song of his that triggered something. But thanks.

5. Sorry if it sounds defensive, but most people have a very skewed view of his coversion
He had some very sound reasons for leaving the business (i.e., it's full of leaches and scumbags who like ripping off the talent and screwing them over), and most people ignore that part. He actually made a record or two after he converted, which most people are surprised to learn of.

He's written several essays about why he left the business, and also why he came back. They're very compelling reading, and make you appreciate why he's lived the life he has.

3. He has a large body of work to listen to.
He has something approaching 40 cds to chose from, and probably a few more- a fair amount of it is surely shallow enough for you to enjoy.

7. And your shoes smell funny, too!
I just thought I'd join in. That'll teach you to bring up entertainers who have converted to Islam, left the business, and returned without your knowing it, won't it? Go ahead, ask about Cassius Clay, I dare you!

8. I have loved Cat Stevens' music for 35 years.
Too bad he has to be on that awful Wikipedia site, but like Google, I guess they can't keep their grubby little paws off of anything.
