Has anyone heard about PETA's latest campaign?
it's to "rebrand" fish as "Sea Kittens" to stop people eating fish.

Seriously.

I am NOT making this up - go look at their website.

My wife really really wants a kitten melt now.

4. Every now and then I just have to wonder...
are they secretly funded by meat companies? 'Cause every time they do something like this, just about everyone I know says, "That reminds me, I haven't had fish in a while. I should go have some!"

6. Interestingly enough
this is the 4th thread I've personally seen on DU on this campaign. Is it pretty loopy? Sure. But it gets folks talking about the topic. Somebody, somewhere will go to their site and see something else that makes them think. Next thing you know, that person is a vegan nazi posting on a political website.

PETA isn't a household name for nothing.

8. The problem is that being well known does not equal being well thought of.
And if the only way their name is getting out there is via silly things like this that make people think they're a bunch of cranks... then they're just going to be known to the public as a bunch of cranks.

13. If that were the case, they'd not still be around, right?
30 years, $30 million/yr budget.

Pretty good for a bunch of cranks.

14. And how would you define 'success' for a group like that?
In terms of how much money they pull in, or in terms of how many of their goals and ideals are reached?

15. Always about the goals.
But you have to keep your name out there. So, while they're getting undercover surveillance at Tyson, they're pushing a poster of a naked celeb that folks will get their panties in a bunch about. While they're getting KFC or another fast food place to adopt different and better animal care procedures, they're doing "sea kittens".

Look at the OP. Thought the campaign was funny. It is. But the key words, "go check their website" is what they want.

It's pretty brilliant.

Fact is, if they were a bunch of kooks, or "terrorists" like others suggest, they'd be gone by now.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it means I'm going to have to rethink a whole bunch of things now.

22. Oktoberain and i went out to dinner the other night with leftyclimber and betaben
We kept cracking up over all of the varieties of SeaKitten that the place had on the menu... so many delectable ways to prepare them!

PETA does some good things, but every once in a while they make complete idjits of themselves.
This is one of those times.

But I assume it's about trying to stop cruelty to animals, or some such nonsense.

When will these people learn? Sheesh!
