My gas bill was $350 -- yikes!
The highest it's ever been before was $150. Apparently DTE Energy bought the winter's supply of gas last summer at the peak of high prices and we are all paying for it now. I can't imagine what people who stay home all day are paying; I turn it down to 58 when I leave for work and when I go to bed.

I'm on a mission for some nice fleece lined slippers and have renewed acquaintance with my down throw. Especially since our nighttime forecast is for below zero every night this week. Brrrrr.

4. have you winterized the house?
put up plastic sheeting in the windows, caulk the edges outside, wrap the ducts, spray in more insulation in your attic. These can cut costs big time (they have lowered our bills)

10. I may be preaching to the choir
but stay away from any plastic that isn't 3M. The tape doesn't hold and the plastic is very thin. I learned that the hard way last winter. (17 windows covered)

My thermostat is never above 60. I put plastic up on the big windows and am lucky to have a downstairs neighbor who hates to be cold.

8. My power bill for a studio apartment above a garage that houses my son's drums
and was used by him and bandmates during winter break was $174.21. The electric heat pump is on a programmable thermostat: somebody pushed the Hold at 69 degrees and FAN ON buttons--and must have left
them set that way for weeks. I had it set to go down to 55 at 11PM and be at 65 during the day, figuring that when they were in there, all those amps and hot bodies would warm the room.

AAAAAAGGHHHHHHGH!!!!!!!

9. I usually use an electric blanket at night between
my sheet & my down comforter so I can turn the heat lower. Very cozy.
