During the "growing" process, I just look like a loser unshaven slob.

I'm wondering, in general (because I know it depends on all sorts of things like hormones and nutrition) how long it takes to get from "clean shaven" to having respectable facial hair.

1. Depends on the person.
For me it takes about... a year. Give or take.

For some it can take only a couple of days. Just depends on the guy.

26. Seriously. I stopped shaving at the age of 20.
Edited on Thu Jan-15-09 10:23 PM by DarkTirade
Finally had something resembling a scraggly beard around the age of 23.

Obviously I got my hair growth genes from my dad's native american side, not my mom's eastern european side. :P My brother usually has a 5 o'clock shadow before noon.

*edit* This is around the age of 23 right here.

There's a reason so few people think I'm as old as I am. :P

6. LOL--no, they only look "bad"
I like 'em. My son has actually had one since he sprouted hair in high school, and he's run the gamut from suave (very neatly trimmed) to Dali crazy (long with pirate braids or his mustache waxed askew). I think it's a good look.

Of course, I've never had the pleasure of making out with a beardo. The friction aspect might alter my fandom. FWIW, I say go for it.

12. LOL, Yeah, maybe so... That worries me too. When all is said and done
I'll probably look just as bad when I have one as I do without one.

18. Goatees ARE bad. They're one of the worst mistakes of the 90s.
Unfortunately, for reasons that would take a book (or at least a novella-sized essay to explain) culture has basically run out of steam and come to a virtual full stop, and so we will be stuck living in the 90s, stylewise, forever. :(

7. Don't throw out your razors.
If you grow a beard, you'll still need to shave & shape your goatee. If you don't shave your throat, you'll look homeless.

21. the great thing about the Thoreau pictures
is that every one i've seen has that, "this life is incredibly stupid" look to him, which kind of goes hand in hand with his literature.

Thoreau was the original Dude

10. good question
I haven't been clean shaven in years, so I don't know for myself.... I did just trim my beard today shorter than it's been in a few years - I don't know if it was a good move or not. I think that I look like less of a fat bastard when I have a beard.

13. There is no such thing as "respectable facial hair"
You'll progress from "dirty chin" to "looks like a douchebag" in anywhere from a few days to a month.

for me to see a pic of you before I make my decision?

I am usually not a fan of goatees and sideburns but on some people they look good.

Others don't need to shave every day.
