Often a derogatory term. But it's sort of an inside joke with my husband and I, because they always call him "little bra" (thinking he is an island boy) but I have Native American heritage while he is of Indian decent (from India). Sorry the explanation was so long.

I take it Haole is Indian, and they often call foreigners/outsiders by that term? I often call my wife Lao Wai, (lao why), which is Chinese for "foreigner/outsider" - it's a very common term for Chinese to use with foreigners, though it can also be derogatory, it's often not. However, when my wife & her mom were speaking in Chinese complaining about "lao wai", I stopped them to say that in this country, they were the Lao Wai, and I've been using that for my wife ever since.
