My mother's cancer treatments are over. To those of you who care for us when we're sick
I want to thank you, even though those words are so inadequate. My mother had 33 radiation treatments in 40 days. She was treated with respect, kindness and compassion in a area that doesn't see nearly enough positive outcomes. Human beings, robbed of their strength and dignity still manage to fight on.

Yesterday the staff gave my mother a diploma and sang a fight song for her. Just typing it makes my eyes fill up with tears. The staff is full of ordinary professionals making an extraordinary difference in the lives of those they care for. Guess they're not that ordinary. ;)

thank you. Thanks to all of you.

3. She's great
Edited on Sat Jan-24-09 12:01 PM by lizziegrace
the treatments were more precautionary than anything. She saw so many who were so sick every day she went in.

She dodged a bullet. She had a very slow-growing tumor and it was caught very, very early. She knows how lucky she is.

Thank you for asking.

2. I hope your mother is doing well
And its nice to see these people (whom I have had various interactions with myself) given the appreciation they deserve. It seems like too often here they are misunderstood badly...

Her neighbors surprised her with a party last night. Good food, drinks and a huge cake. She's got lots of love and support.

19. Although patients may be too scared,
tired or overwhelmed to say so, you make a huge difference. My mother couldn't stop talking about the staff.

I'm glad you're on your way to becoming one of those professionals.

at your Mother's side during this and you should also take a bow, but you are right...the people who care for people like your Mom and my friend are just exceptional. I send all my best wishes and thoughts and prayers to your Mom!

20. That's kind of you
my mother is 2000 miles away. I haven't seen her in 2 years, as much as I would have liked to. Unemployment kind of keeps you stuck where you are and no vacation when you start a new job is a problem.

She's got good friends, my father and a team of doctors who've gotten her through two rounds of cancer in 15 years.

This year is bound to be better than last. If my dreams about Old West terrorists and $11 and $15 bills mean anything, it must be that. :D

26. People in health care, who are kind, often seem like Angels on Earth
I think of the nurses who helped calm me down when I had steroid injections in my neck. One of them said, "You know you are our favorite patient." I replied, "I bet you say that to all your patients!" She & the other nurses laughed. Now... how many times per day do you suppose that nurse goes through that same line, making it sound like the first time she's ever said it? Some people are true heroes... and they don't get a lot of recognition either.

Hope your mother feels better soon.

27. I have so much respect for people in the caring professions
I've been hospitalized several times (thankfully for non-lifethreatening things) and have always been treated so well by the nursing staff and other caregivers. Being treated as an individual rather than just another patient is so important, especially when a person is fighting a serious illness.

My best to your mom and to you.

:hi:
I'm happy to hear that your mother is doing well and has finished her treatments.
A diploma and song is a beautiful way to say good-bye...brought tears to my eyes, also.
What a wonderful and caring staff...
:loveya:
I didn't know that your mother was an RN, and this is the reason my daughter decided to become a nurse.
After all the years of TLC, she became an RN at the age of 36.
Thank you for acknowledging all the wonderful caregivers out there...
You're right....they're not that ordinary...:-)

I know that this has lightened your load....thank you for sharing.
Love and hugs to you, your mother, and family...

peace~
