"Nassau slaps restriction on candy cigarettes" |
|
Nassau Democrats passed a bill Monday to make candy retailers put candy and bubble-gum cigarettes behind the counter, much like real cigarettes.http://www.newsday.com/news/local/ny-ponass2712399099jan27,0,7047892.storyFile Under: Stupid Laws

1. I don't know - I don't really like the whole candy cigarette thing |
|
I remember when I was a kid - I loved those things. And we used them to pretend that we had the real thing. Making something as dangerous as cigarettes seem fun and cool doesn't seem like a great idea to me. I wish they didn't make them at all.

dumbass? I wish they would stop making them, too. There's absolutely no reason a kid should have something like that to encourage playing at smoking.
They were really big when I was a kid, too. It was very popular to smoke back then. I grew up with a habit I can't seem to shake off and that will probably be the death of me.
So take your feigned outrage and shove it, k?

I'm old enough that it wasn't as well known as the scourge it is so well known as today. And like all young people, I thought I was bullet-proof. Nothing has changed. Too many young people still think it can't hurt 'em no matter what anyone says or shows them.

43. What does my age have to do with the fact that you made the choice to smoke? |
|
I grew up in a house where both of my parents smoked, my brothers and I all ate candy cigarettes, my brothers and I have never smoked cigarettes. We made the choice not to smoke.

I thought you were being serious about having a serious discussion about...candy.
I posted the story b/c I thought it was funny in a quirky sort of way. Odd news story and all that. I had no idea there were people out there who took this kind of crusade seriously.

Neither my brothers nor I smoke. The simplest solution is for parents not to buy them for their children.

11. This is silly; Candy ciggies used to be my fave candy |
|
I liked the flavor and the texture. And yes, at that time, both my parents smoked. My dad quit in the mid-70s and my mom eventually quit 10 years later when she retired.
No one was hanging over me telling me how cool I looked with one.
In an odd way, because I got to practice "smoking" with them, I got the chance to see how pretentious and stupid the real habit was.

26. Regardless it's simply makes the idea of smoking palatable to kids at a young age |
|
When I was a kid the candy cigs looked very much like a pack of Lucky Strikes. Bubble gum cigars were really more of an adult novelty item for dads to hand out to non-smoking friends after a kid was born. They were widely available and I partook in all of them as a young lad. I never took up cigarette smoking, but that doesn't mean others weren't heavily influenced.
But the bottom line is they are really not any better than the Joe Camel ads. They market the idea of smoking to kids if not the actual implements of smoking themselves. The harsh reality is if you don't take up smoking by the time you are 21, the odds of a person smoking later in life drops off to nil. Any marketing of even the idea of smoking to kids is a really bad idea and is something that has far outlived it's time.

because in my home we were all after my parents to quit because we were all very aware of the health risks.
I didn't even realize the things still existed. I thought they must have been done away with because I don't think I have seen any in 20 years.
