It will look like a glazed donut by tomorrow morning.

2. 30 sand trucks in the whole city. No salt, no plows. |
|
Who wants to invest money in anti-ice infrastructure when ice shows up once or twice a year, max?
Combine that with giant overpasses and wheeeeeeee! If you drive, you get 100 wrecks an hour. Better to just stay home.

3. The fact that we don't deal with it, usually, is the problem! |
|
People drive whaay too fast on the roads.

4. The problem here in KS |
|
is that people think they have to drive 15 mph at the first hint of snow or ice. What hogwash.

5. 15 is better than 60 mph when we're talking freezing temps! |
|
People act like they want to die... I swear it. By tomorrow at 6am there will be at least 1/2 a dozen SUV's stuck in ditches around here. :eyes:

10. you don't understand.. the roads are usually clear... |
|
but people are so damn afraid of snowflakes they act like it will come the the windshield and eat them if they travel over 15. You can go 35-40 safely on snowy roads; you just have to account for increased stopping distance and learn to not use the brake so often.

16. all those people in SUVs, pickups and/or 4 wheel drive anything think they |
|
are invincible and immortal so they do much stupider stuff than normal. Then the ones who don't know to stay back from everyone, don't make sudden moves and don't slam on your brakes..
the rest of us stay home if we can.
The sleet has started in FW by the way

19. The school districts can be idiots--well, a select few |
|
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 10:05 PM by rainbow4321
1) DISD spokesperson said on the 7 am news (Tuesday) that once they chose to be open, they would NOT consider closing. Nice. Said that closing early would inconvenience parents who expect their kids to be in school all day. I'd say it is more of an inconvenience to have the kids ANYwhere besides HOME in one piece/safe. You guys are a school, not a daycare center. Even daycare centers shut down on Tuesday (and will likely on Wednesday)
2) Plano ISD said during the last mini ice storm that THEY don't consider ever opening "late". Why? Because their bus service on a staggered schedule so "by the time we got ALL the kids to school, it would be noon". Elem. schools, middle schools, high schools, and senior highs were chnaged to start at different times so the district didn't have to buy more buses--they would have to do the same staggering thing in any morning ice storms so, yeah, a 2 hour late start in elementary schools would mean a noon start for high schools. So the district does either a "we are open" or "we are closed" deal..no "delayed openings" like other districts do. Screw the people who have to drive on ice at 7 am..can't have them getting to school on melted/safer roads at 10 am!! I was shocked they let the kids out today "early". Of course, early for my senior high daughter was 1:45pm because, you got it, the staggered bus schedule was in effect starting with the 1230 dismissal of elementary students.
3) Ft Worth schools closed on Tuesday BUT told parents "yeah we are open, but feel free to keep your kid home, it will be an excused absence" if the parents didn't want the kids out on the slick roads. Most likely they did that because by being open they still got their daily state $$ allotment, which they don't get if they close. But, hey, least they gave the parents an out.
-------- On a side note..did we really need a closeup of the icicles hanging from a street sign and an analysis of those icicles from the newsperson in the field?? They were at that site because someone just had a car accident on an icy bridge and they were reporting on it. As if the car spinning out on the icy bridge and the 7 emergency vehicles at the scene was not evidence enough that we were having an ice problem..we have more PROOF..."the icicles are much longer than they were when we showed them earlier" (camera closeup of the sign's icicles).
(sigh) Only in Dallas.

Frozen ice/rain just started falling heavy here in Plano :-( This is going suck in the morning. Went to the store this afternoon to stock up--I played hooky today so I go to the store before they got packed with the after-work shoppers. Whew.

27. Remember the 1993 Thanksgiving Day Game? |
|
Played in the middle of a blizzard. I think it was Cowboys-Dolphins, and Leon Lett made some bonehead play that gave the game to the 'Phins.
That was the first time I realized that it can get snowy and cold in Texas. For whatever reason, before that I always thought it was perpetually hot there.

It was sooooo cold in the stadium. And such a shitty end to the game. The whole place emptied out wrapped in blankets looking like a bunch of refugees, miserable for the dumbass play and the cold. Ah memories. :)
