That young guy is 400lbs and they have him doing a very
vigorous workout... one I wouldn't advise someone so out-of-shape to start with.

8. It's a modern day 'reality show' -- pushing the envelope, and peoples' lives, is what it's all about

20. Thing is, they have full medical staff and resources.
Some sedentary 400 lb person watching this and deciding to go run up a steep hill "like they do on the show" may well kill them.

21. That is another thing that bothers me...
but even full medical staff can't save a person from a massive coronary, either. :scared:

23. I guarantee they're wired up the first couple weeks.
Full monitors, etc. They'd be stopped before it got out of hand.

24. People watching cannot even come close to following that diet/exercise program
It's unrealistic and dangerous. It's extreme and extreme never works.

5. My husband watches it.
He hates the "voted off the island thing" and the over the top product placements.

But he watches because he has lost over 100 pounds since July of 2007.

25. He had strong motivation.
In the ten years I have known his mom, she has gone from being about 140 pounds to well over 300 pounds and she is only 4'11".

It is hard to watch.

9. If it's expected that all those who are markedly overweight
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 09:43 PM by Wapsie B
to put themselves through that kind of hell the battle of the bulge is already lost. From couch potato to triathlete? Maybe some people can do it and do it long term. But those who think that most overweight people are going to do that are deluding themselves. Yeah, it just might take that kind of effort on the part of some to lose 100+ pounds. But what'd be wrong with just losing 50? And keeping it off of course.

15. Keeping it off is my my difficult part
It seems easier to lose than maintain. I really need to get with it, again, though.

Both teams really need to be there.

17. From the little I've watched it (two weeks now)
it seems the program gets them on a "jump start" to better habits. Hopefully, they will take those better habits and continue to use them.

22. It certainly can.
For example, last season, some of the contestants that went home fairly early came back to the finale looking just incredible.

However, orange team is about to go home. And Dan(?) is going to have problems without professional help.
