Are the name changes retro-active?

When looking through archives will the old name be replaced by the new name, like avatars and sig-lines are updated?

Or, will the old name remain?

although the new screenname appears in those old message.

When the thread is listed with replies, the old name appears, but the new name is in the actual post.

But, if you can find an old post, the new name is attached to it. Interesting.
