Ab in the bass, Bb and Db over top...what would you call the chord?
Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 06:41 PM by bbernardini
There's an F in the melody, but not in the accompaniment. Could be a Bbm/Ab, I suppose. Or an Absus2sus4 (no 5th). :) Thoughts?

6. That's probably what I'd call it.
But I slept through most of my music theory class. (*&%ing music department only offered them at 8 am, and had my rehearsals run until 10 pm. WTF did they think I was going to do?

13. "Just play the root and the third, and let the horns get that other shit"
At least, that's what we used to say in Jazz Band

9. I'd say Bflat minor 7
However, not knowing what key it's in/how the chord is functioning, it could well be a Db6, as someone else mentioned - having the Ab in the bass makes me think that could be more likely.

10. I agree that it's most likely B-flat minor 7.
Leaving out the fifth hardly matters.

12. Count me in with the Bbmin7 crowd
I just consulted the chord dictionary on my keyboard, and it came up with Bbmin7 as well.

14. Yeah, I'm going to agree with Bbm7, absent context.
What's the next chord?

15. Here's some context:
It's clearly meant to be a dominant going into the tonic, which is why I would lean towards the Absus2sus4, or at least a Bbm/Ab (rather than a Bbm7, since the implied harmony is the dominant).

17. Bbm/Ab bass if you want who ever is reading it to play that exact voicing.
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 06:42 PM by MilesColtrane
Otherwise, I'd just call it a an Absus13.
