What's your favorite low-budget sci-fi movie?
Dark Star :D

(Doolittle convinces the bomb not to explode)

Doolittle: Hello, Bomb? Are you with me?
Bomb #20: Of course.
Doolittle: Are you willing to entertain a few concepts?
Bomb #20: I am always receptive to suggestions.
Doolittle: Fine. Think about this then. How do you know you exist?
Bomb #20: Well, of course I exist.
Doolittle: But how do you know you exist?
Bomb #20: It is intuitively obvious.
Doolittle: Intuition is no proof. What concrete evidence do you have that you exist?
Bomb #20: Hmmmm... well... I think, therefore I am.
Doolittle: That's good. That's very good. But how do you know that anything else exists?
Bomb #20: My sensory apparatus reveals it to me. This is fun.

2. Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning (2005)

The future looks bleak for Captain Pirk. Originally from the far future, he traveled back to save the world, but was shipwrecked on the 21st century. The world of the past is a dangerous place and he is finding it difficult to convince the ladies he is, in fact, an intergalactic space hero from the future. To make things right Pirk comes up with a questionable plan to save mankind's future...

Read the http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472566/">imdb entry and http://www.starwreck.com/download.php">download it legally (and for free) here.

Runtime: 103 min
Language: Finnish (English subtitles)
Budget: €15,000
Resolution: 640x272
Codec: XviD

A Finnish-language Star Trek spoof has been viewed on the Internet more than three million times in less than two months, making it Finland's most-viewed movie ever, according to Reuters. The movie, Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning, presented free on www.starwreck.com, was created by a group of students, who used home computers to create the special effects. English subtitles are provided. One blog, p2pnet, which champions the cause of peer-to-peer systems users against Hollywood studios, ran this comment on the film: "If you haven't seen this spoof, do. It is on par with anything Hollydud puts out. Better it is free. It shows that you don't have to have tons of bucks to throw at making a movie to get a movie."

9. Downloading one of the avi files now
though I don't understand how the separate English subtitles file works.

It looks funny though :D
How many times have you watched it? ;)

11. Couple of times
The version I downloaded last summer (364 MB AVI) came with subtitles. No way to turn them off or on.

Very funny movie. Knowledge of Star Trek helps. Knowledge of Babylon 5 is a bonus.

21. Then you will love Pirkinning
Pirk = Kirk (obviously)
Info = Data
Fukov = Chekov
Maggot hole = worm hole
twinkler = phaser
twist = warp

and so on... :rofl:

I was unfamiliar with Finnish so this film was rather cool from that perspective. A rather pretty language.

_______________________________________
From wiki:

A lot of the word-level humour is based on humorous mistranslation. For most of the Star Trek and science fiction terminology there exists corresponding terminology in Finnish, due to the large amount of science fiction and Star Trek that has been translated to Finnish. Star Wreck takes these established translations and twists them: for example, a phaser is conventionally translated as vaiheinen ("that which has phases"), while the Wreck equivalent is tuikutin (literally, "a thing that can cause twinkling"). Similarly, warp is conventionally translated as poimu ("tuck", especially of a garment), while Wreck uses kieroutuminen (literally, "twisting" or "becoming perverse," depending on the intended meaning).

These mistranslation puns are impossible to translate to English effectively, though the English subtitles do try to create different puns (twinkler instead of phaser, twist for warp, etc). Likewise, "photon torpedoes" have become simply "light balls", and wormhole a "maggot hole". Emperor Pirk himself has apparently a bad understanding of various words, such as using "resorts" for "resources": the original Finnish wording uses "resorit", meaning "sleeve ends" instead of correct "resurssit".

The case of Mikhail Garybrandy is a prime example of an untranslatable spoof. The Finnish name of the character is Mihail Karigrandi, which is a reference to a fictional character Kari Grandi (played by Eeki Mantere), whose adventures for the good of thirsty people (bringing them the Grandi-brand juice to drink) were depicted in a long-running Finnish TV commercial series. The tagline of the commercials, "Kari Grandi, kaikkien janoisten sankari, aikamme legenda" ("Kari Grandi, the hero of all who are thirsty, a legend in our time") was paraphrased by Garybrandy in his line "Olenhan kaikkien janoisten sankari... aikamme legenda" (roughly, "After all, I am the hero of all who are thirsty... a legend in our time") spoken near the end of the movie. This is funny also because Garibaldi was an alcoholic and Garybrandy takes to drink again in the movie, and drinking is often glorified in the Finnish (male) culture. The words "hero" and "legend" are very often used in relation to drinking alcohol; "hero" is used sarcastically to mean a bungler or anti-hero (often used in a friendly male bonding fashion) and "legend" refers to all kinds of (spectacularly) goofy things people do when under the influence, or the said people.

I took a look at the reviews on Amazon and other sites and now people really like this movie - apparently it's become a "cult classic". I wonder what the writer/actress Anne Carlisle is doing now?

25. Either "Zone Troopers" or "When Time Expires"
Both are low budget, with good plots and decent acting. Neither are the standard scifi crap but have some neat twists and humor.

and it did look pretty good. Good acting and script, and seemed like a good time-travel plot. It's nice to see Mark Hamill in a live-action role, though he is a wonderful voice-actor, too :)

27. All of them
OK, not really, but almost everything that was ever on MST3K amuses me.

For serious ultra-low budget sci-fi films ($7000), I found "Primer" (2004) to be interesting, but I can't claim that I was able to follow all of the paradoxes.
