When they had the headline about the octuplet mom having "six more kids" was I the only one
who thought, for a moment, that that meant "since Tuesday"?

1. I thought she had sextets as well...
I don't follow these multiple birthings very closely...

And for you Ken...

2. Thanks for that. That's one of my favorite Jara songs
Edited on Sat Jan-31-09 09:30 AM by Ken Burch
I'll translate it here for those who don't know the Spanish:

"On my way to work
I think of you
through the streets of the town
I think of you
when I look at the faces
through steamy windows
not knowing who they are, where they go
I think of you, my love
of you, companero of my life
and of the future
of the bitter hours and the happiness
of being able to live
working at the beginning of a story
without knowing the end

When the day's work is over
when the evening comes
lengthening its shadow
over the roofs we have made
and returning from our labor
discussing among friends
reasoning out things
of this time and destiny
I think of you, my love
I think of you

When I come home
you are there
and we weave our dreams together
working at the beginning of the story
without knowing..."

Victor wrote that in honor of a young man who had been killed by the police on a strike picket. He imagined the thoughts the young man may have had in his head as he came home from work to his wife every day.

Of course, it because a kind of epitaph for Victor as well, after his murder in the 1973 coup(Which the people of Chile refer to as "our 9/11" because it had occurred on the same date as that later event.)

A film was made, after the coup, about Victor's life. In one part of the film, Joan Jara, Victor's widow, reads the English version of the lyrics as an intro to the recording of Victor singing the song.

Thanks for help keeping the songs alive.

4. El Derech De Vivir was about Vietnam(Victor was an internationalist, remember)
He actually recorded it with a folk-rock band called "Los Blobs".

"Plegaria un Labrador(Prayer To A Worker) was Victor's most famous song, and he used in it the structure of the "Our Father" to call the workers of Chile to action:

Stand up, look at the mountains
Source of the wind, the sun, the water
You, who change the course of rivers,
Who, with the seed, sow the flight of your soul,
Stand up, look at your hands,
Give to your hand to your brother so you can grow.
We'll go together, united by blood,
Today is the day
We can make the future.

Deliver us from the master
who keeps us in misery.
The kingdom of justice and equality come.
Blow, like the wind blows
the wild flowers of the mountain pass.
Clean the barrel of my gun like fire
They will be done at last on earth
Give us your strength and courage to struggle.
Blow, like the wind blows
the wild flowers of the mountain pas
Clean the barrel of my gun like fire

Stand up, look at your hands,
Give to your hand to your brother so you can grow.
We'll go together, united by blood,
Now and in the hour of our death.
Amen.
