Does it hurt your feelings when you make something for somebody.... |
|
Then you don't see it anywhere in their house? (Especially if it's something that hangs on a wall)?

1. I'm lucky actually, with my knitting. |
|
I'm a knitter, and there are 2 kinds of knitters. The first kind are called results knitters, and they are all about the end product of all their hard labor. The love the objects they make. The second kind are called process knitters, who just like the knitting part and don't really give a crap what happens to the end result once they're finished with it. I am the second kind. Once I make something for someone and give it to them, I don't care if they throw it in the garbage, I really don't. I got the enjoyment out of the knitting part of it already.

3. Hey! I'm a process knitter too! |
|
Although now that I'm on my sock kick, I'm getting a little product-y. Hrm.

4. I try not to invest my feelings in other people's decisions |
|
If I make something for someone, it's because I care about them, not because I want to see validation of my generosity.
I have stuff that other people have given me or made for me that is not displayed because it doesn't go with what is already there or because I don't have a place to put it. It doesn't make me value it any less and I certainly hope they would not interpret it that way.

6. My fathers wife has sisters |
|
who give her some really silly looking gifts. Jewel embedded silver sterling frogs, etc. I can always tell when the sisters are coming over, because all the items are displayed. At other times they are all put up. But I notice when she works with me, she is always wearing earrings I had given her, and I wonder if she does that for my benefit, or if she really likes them. At least she is very considerate.
Yes, I might be a bit hurt if I never saw something I made for someone, but once I give it away it is the recipients decision whether it matches their decor or tastes and they can do with it what they will.

I make jewelry, and try to match what the person seems to like and already wear with what I make them. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Like you, I'm tempted to say "I never see you in that peridot necklace - what's the deal?"
Thursday night I was at my Book Club, and kept staring at the necklace one of the women was wearing. Then I reached over and grabbed it (while she was talking) and said "I knew I recognized that - I re-knotted it for you! It looks way better now!" (my friends are remarkably forebearant when it comes to my outbursts).

9. Whether I sell a painting or give it away |
|
it's not mine anymore, you can do with it what you will. Just don't sign it and try to sell it as your own. That'll get your ass kicked. :)
