1. Ill massage it
 and there are two explanations. One, it feels like the kick of a horse, two..there was a pitcher in the 20's named Charlie Radbourne who suffered from leg cramps..

3. You can help it go away (until Paddy gets there, anyway)
by walking around on it...

Stretching helps too...

Hope it goes away soon, sweetie!

4. It's a baseball thing
The term may date back to American baseball slang of the 1880s, possibly from the pitcher Charlie "Old Hoss" Radbourn who is said to have suffered from cramps.<10> Another story mentions a horse named Charley that used to work at Comiskey Park, the Chicago White Sox's ballpark. In those days, an old, retired horse was often called "Charlie".

Hoss Radbourn won 60 games one season, btw — and he was only like 5' 6".

But is it a charlie horse or a spasm/strain? A charlie horse is when you get whacked in the quads.

6. mmmm thigh
:P

If a charley horse does occur, soaking in a tub of warm water with some Epsom salts added can help ease the pain. Typically, it is best to soak for about twenty to thirty minutes in order to obtain results. Simply rubbing the charley horse can also relieve the pain. It is important always to rub with the muscle that has been affected by the charley horse, rather than across it. If the charley horse occurs in the calf, which is one of the most common spots for it to occur, it is best to rub from behind the knee toward the heel.

Since dehydration and lack of potassium can cause a charley horse, drinking water and eating foods with potassium can sometimes help to make it go away. Similarly, stretching – particularly the calf – can help make the pain and the spasm subside.

Another remedy for a charley horse is to cut up three small lemons, one small grapefruit, and two small oranges and place them in a blender, peels and all. After blending these together, add a teaspoon of cream of tartar and blend again. This mixture helps to relieve the stiffness associated with a charley horse. Two tablespoons of the mixture should be taken orally along with two tablespoons of water twice a day. Ideally, one dose should be taken in the morning and another should be taken before going to bed.

19. You can get rid of it by tensing up that muscle as hard as you can.
I don't know why it works but it does. It works even better if you tense the muscle when you feel one coming on. But, can't help with the charlie part.

28. Stretch your leg out
Hyperflex your foot: move your foot to bring your big toe as close to your shin as possible. Sometimes taking your foot in your hands and gently pulling helps. This works like a charm for lower leg cramps. It's worth a try for thigh cramps.

The other thing that might work is doing a "push up" against the wall. Stand flat-footed at arm's length from a wall and place both palms on the wall. Now, without raising your heels, bend your elbows so that the top part of your body moves closer to the wall. Hold for a few seconds and push back again.

Both these maneuvers work for leg cramps in pregnant women, and I've found them helpful for this not-so-pregnant one.

seriously. assuming "charlie horse" is the same as a muscle cramp.

some long distance riders/runners keep a few restaurant pouches of mustard with them for cramps.

33. Get a pan of lukewarm water.
Put it down at the base of a chair, as if you were going to soak your feet in it.

Place the foot of the affected thigh a couple of inches over the water.

After a few moments the spasm will begin to migrate down your leg towards the pan of water, eventually exiting through the sole of your foot.

Why does this work?

Because everybody knows you can lead a charley horse to water, you just can't make it drink.
