Did you ever get to take that trip you planned out as a teenager? |
|
You know the one- the grand breakawayandseeitall road trip? The trip that would be just you and your best bud, roading it across the country on the way to whatever miracle place you'd dreamed of visiting?
I'm 53 now. I don't even recall the details of my plan any more, only to remember I had my own special dream. I do know I never took that trip. Granted, I've taken many trips for good or for bad in all the years since, but I still don't believe I've seen all the miracle places that exist inside my own private world.
I think I don't remember my planned trip any more simply because I finally discovered that real life is ever so much more fun than teen dreams. It's a pity, really, because those dreams are usually pretty fascinating to hear about. The great part is the dreams never go away- they simply get richer and better as you age- and as you learn how to think deeply instead of broadly.
Who's up for a road trip? I've been thinking about building this really great Chopper- once I collect all the parts I'll just build it in my living room then take off toward the mountains....

We did the Route 66 road trip.
That was really great.
Everybody should do that.
There is still some of the road left.
This was back in 1973.
Good times.

5. Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada |
|
Never happened - the supply logistics were too complicated, I never got into good enough condition and never could afford to set aside that much time. And - I'm sort of scared of bears.
Meanwhile I got married and raised a family. It's been over 22 years since I even backpacked overnight.

When I was 17 my best friend and I took a trip around Europe for a month - good times. It's that trip that made us both want to move to Europe, I think. He's now lived in Prague for 10 years, and I've lived in England for 2. We're still good friends too. I just went to visit him for a week last month.
I'm always up for a road trip. I've driven cross-country many times, but never in the sort of aimless way that I'd like to be able to. I'm always going somewhere, damn it!

8. I've taken many of those trips. |

I don't remember if I had one teen dream version but I probably took it. Nothing makes me happier than a good road trip.

11. Yeah. I dropped out of college in my Sophomore year, |
|
bought a 1953 Chrysler New Yorker (this was 1964) for $100 and set out across the country. Crossed it three times, southern, central, and northern routes in two months. Car blew up in Charleston, SC, so I Greyhounded it back home. Saw lots. Did lots. Ended up joining the USAF in 1965 and finished college after my enlistment term was up.
In the meantime, everything had changed. It was an amazing time of my life.

After my dad passed away from an extended illness my mom decided we could all use a break. She bought my brother and I plane tickets to Luxembourg and a Eurrail pass and said GO. My brother left 2 weeks before me and went to the Canne film festval, he met me and we went to the 24 race at LeMans, another race in Spa Belgium, saw the summer solstice at Stonehenge, climbed together in Wales, bought huge chunks of hash in Amsterdam and then went to the Van Gogh museum, and spent the 4th of July on the US bicentennial at the Hofbrau house in Munich.

14. Not really planned but I'm the spontaneous type |

Stuck my thumb out at 17 to see how far I could hitchhike. Got home 3 weeks later having logged approximately 8000 miles.
Have taken many road trips since, some in a car with some money, some by thumb with nothing at all. All of them wonderful.
Walk outside, get in the car and start driving. Now.

15. I had one planned for right after college. It didn't happen, and that's a good thing -- more because |
|
of the company than anything else. On the other hand, a couple years later I then went to live in another country. That was plenty exciting.

16. Yep ... Rode trains around Europe with some friends at age 19 -- no responsibilities, totally free. |
|
Also, I have driven across country twice (moved from San Francisco to Washington DC, lived there for four years, drove back west to Oregon after spending a summer in Colorado).
