Does anyone else sometimes lie awake reviewing stupid things you've said over the years? |
|
On occasion I'll have a night where I play little "scenes of regret" from the past 40 odd year, many stemming from school years: The time my 8th grade teacher overheard me tell a friend I didn't like him (I didn't really hate him; he was just sort of odd), the time a "joke" misfired and hurt someone, a handful of times I was downright mean to people (often in my single days it involved guys I wasn't interested in and I was grasping for a way to avoid a date), etc. etc. Many of these incidences can be explained away by immaturity and lack of life experience at the time, but I'm still ashamed of them.

1. It's not just me who does that??? |
|
It's oddly soothing to know I'm not the only one.

I remember things I've said or done that, in hindsight, were either embarrassing or inappropriate (at least to me they were) and still am embarrassed about it years later.

6. Well, thank goodness I'm not the only one. I've been doing this for years. |
|
Recycling old stuff. Things I wish I hadn't said/done, or done differently.
I wish I could dump those memories like unwanted files in a Recycle Bin, and then empty it.

7. I did that all the time until I was 25. Then I got great sleep from SSRIs. Lately |
|
they have not been working so well. I guess I have alot of worries. But seriously if anyone wants to know how well SSRIs work in terms of putting one to sleep efficiently (even when one is going through hell) just PM me.

8. Oh yes. I believe it's an adult thing to do. Keeps us honest |
|
and reminds us not to get overly judgmental, especially with the younin's.

I think my oldest remembered embarassment is 1st grade, maybe? There are things I will never live down, in my head... :(

But I try to use those times to remind myself to do better next time I'm in those situations.

But as someone has said upthread--not lately thanks to my anti-depressants..I do not dwell on the unpleasant nearly as much as I used to. That said occasionally an incident will trigger a memory and it all comes flooding back...x(

It's the dumb ones, not the serious things though. Things that nobody else involved probably even remembers.

16. Oh hells yeah. There's a cue of them in my head. |
|
Little vignettes of embarrassing or exceptionally stupid things I've done or said.
All I can think of to do about it is to feel the unpleasantness again and think, "I wish the person I offended could know how bad this is still making me feel years later. I wish I could apologize to them, and I'd like to think they'd forgive me."

17. Yeah. It's a really short path from my brain to my mouth. |

There should be fire doors in there to slow the spread of unfortunate words.
