My Grandmother Died today, she was 101 and a real New Deal Democrat

This is a photo of her at age 99.

She was born May 4, 1907 in a farmhouse outside of Troy, TN. She had a hard life, picking cotton and all the other hard hard chores a sharecropper's child has to perform. Her first Husband was my Maternal Grandfather, he ran booze during prohibition and my Grandmother made bathtub Gin and told stories of running down the fire escape as police were knocking down their apartment door. My Maternal Grandfather was a Gambler, and the family rarely had money so my Grandmother worked as a Maid in a Gary, IN hotel until she was promoted to Waitress at the Holiday Inn, she received a pension from that job until she died.

Her first Husband died in 1966. She then married my Father's Father, so she was both my Maternal Grandmother and my Paternal Step-Grandmother. She will be buried between both of my Grandfathers this Wednesday. This made my Parents' divorce a little messier, both my parents will be at the funeral this week. I mean, they're still Step-Siblings.....

She taught me much about cooking Southern Food. She took care of my Brothers and I during bad times. She lost two Husbands, One Daughter and one Grandson in her life. She fell and broke her arm in two places last Sunday and was told she was going to have to move out of her Assisted Living Facility into a Nursing Home. My Mom was in Tennessee arranging this as my Grandmother's condition worsened and then she quietly died.

She used to refer to The Chimp as "That Filthy Drug Addict"

Rest in peace MoMo......

12. My condolences to you and your family, Burma Jones.
What a wonderful woman she was, and what an inspiration
to us all.

My Mom is 89, and in the same boat. :(

She wants to live in a nursing home,( from assisted living) as she is unable to care
for herself at all, lately. My brother and I are working on finding
her one.

Thanks for sharing your grandmother's photo and story with us.

She was a great lady.

17. what a lovely lady
saw a lot of the century. Great that you have so much of her history

My grandmother died at 100 - born 1898, died in 2000 - so she spanned 3 centuries. She told me stories about seeing the first car coming through their Pennyslvania coal town, the first refrigerator, lots of changes over that particular 100 years.

Poor dirt farmer from Oklahoma. Thought FDR was just about the greatest American ever. He would have been 99 last month.

My sincerest sympathies.

39. She resembled somewhat of my own grandmother.
She was looking good in that photo for 99.

Sorry about your loss, but I'm sure someday you'll meet again on the other side.

All my best and condolences to your family.

Mark.
