sorry but I don't get the oscars and all the acter/actress worship |
|
I don't get it.Why do people drool over these people? They are just people who happen to act.

1. Some respect the art form. |
|
I watch the Oscars mainly to see which performers and movies will be honored. Of course, it's usually a popularity contest or the awards are given to those who are "due" but I love film so I am more interested in that angle than anything else.

2. Athletes are just people who happen to play a game |
|
But because they do it very well, get paid boat loads of money and are always on TV people drool over them.
I suspect it has more to do with the TV and money thing since there are a lot of great actors who don't get drooled over who never make it onto the big screen.

it just kills me sometimes watching people treating them like royalty.
There were HOURS of pre oscar shows about who was wearing what dress and who was dating who.I mean who cares?
Put out a good movie and I'll watch it but I won't pay any more attention to them on a personal level than I would any other person I have never met.

6. But there's always that slim chance you could meet them . . . |
|
I ran into one of last night's nominees next to my local Krispy Kreme.
It was the best day of my life.
(Except for important stuff like getting married, finding a great job, etc, etc.)

I know an active nfl player(my wife used to watch him in day care)an ex nfl player who lives down the road and mets closer Billy Wagner who pitched high school ball a few miles away but I don't worship them.
Will Smith and angelina Jolie could move in next to me and I wouldn't care.

8. Uh, some of them can act. Others just look pretty. |
|
Tom Cruise = looks pretty. Morgan Freeman = someone who knows how to act.
Oddly enough, who gets all the accolades? Not the one with talent. The pretty one does.

12. what accolades has Tom Cruise been getting lately? |
|
The people who are talked about are the people who have something out there. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is held in much higher esteem than Tom Cruise, by colleagues and by consumers. He's no beauty queen.

9. What I don't give a shit about is the fashion industry. |
|
Seriously - all the pages and pages of fashion coverage in the LA Times the day after is completely lost on a guy like me.

11. There's a basic human need to revere alpha mammels (Bucky get Jungian) |
|
It's probably also related to the human instinct for creating pantheons of deities. Part of our souls simply crave having a variety of larger-than-life personalities (whether Olympians, or Catholic saints, or the Hindu pantheon, or Shinto rosters of ancestors, or the gala of movie stars on our homes' electronic temples) to gaze at with wonder & awe. So at a deep psychological level, Hollywood is helping us realize our need to imagine and rediscover mythic stories and folk legends in the form of formulaic movies or predictable "reality" shows that inevitably turn to celebrity-based formats.
If it were not for Hollywood's myth-making psuedoreligious reverence for actors, we'd all have to read books or go to church to get these needs met. And how sucky would THAT be!
