Be sure to shake your cans in front of other people at the grocer's. |

That way, you can tell how much water is mixed in with the actual food item.
Giorgio brand mushrooms, 6 months ago, had a far lower ratio between mushroom and saltwater. Drain the water and the tin appears 80% full. When I got home, I drained the new can and it's 50% full of mushrooms. At the same price, where's the extra mushroomy goodness? They added in more water and claimed it was the same weight. Oink oink to them.
Also, keep a tab of prices -- if you see an inflated price yet has a sale tag on it and someone next to you is saying it's a great deal, mutter "it's a ripoff".
Two 1.5Qt tubs of Edy's brand frozen lard for $7, on sale apparently, is a real ripoff. I remember when it was 1.75Qt for $3.50... Albeit at walmart; where it's cheaper to shop yet anyone who goes there is labeled a deadbeat, apparently... why is the middle class put to blame for everything, even when the media one day says something and four days later says the exact opposite? We spend too much or now we're saving too much... What happened to the good old days when someone sayd eggs were bad for you followed up with how great they were?
Oh well.

1. We are seeing the economic downturn in small ways. |

Our area is one of the least hit if you believe what the newspaper says. I have noticed higher prices, especially on organic food. I am not going to be shaking my cans at anyone though.
