Never thought I would respect an action flick , but "Das Boot" was phenomenal ! |
|
I saw it yesterday , and boy it is a real work of art , I never thought action could ever reach that level .

3. I like the way the submariners are portrayed as apolitical, and even contemptuous |
|
of the one declared Nazi on board.
You find yourself rooting for these guys, and then think: "But they were the enemy!"
I mean it, wars should be fought by the old shitheaded assholes who want them in the first place. Then all we young guys from all the nations can just hang out and drink beer together... :toast::beer::fistbump:

9. Most of the Kriegsmarine hated Hitler. |
|
There's a two volume set called Hitler's U-Boat War by Clay Blair that goes into all things Kriegsmarine in great detail. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41T7KBHSC5L._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA240_SH20_OU01_.jpghttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51SFHXB6GML._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA240_SH20_OU01_.jpg

7. Great movie. I read they filmed it in sequence to heighten the realism. |

14. The in-sequence filming was in order to capture the progressive growth of facial hair |
|
and the growing unhealthy pallor all of the sailors got. The actors were advised to stay out of the sun for the duration of the shoot in order to get them to look pale and pasty.

8. I really liked that movie, and I am not a war film fan at all. |
|
I actually saw it the first time on TCM or AMC. They later played the English overdubbed version on Bravo later, and I didn't think it was nearly as good.

10. The same producers are behind Stalingrad, an even better, and heavier, movie. |
|
Das Boot was the first DVD I bought when I got a DVD player. Hard not to get claustrophobic watching it, especially when they're stuck on the bottom. :scared:

12. I have never rooted for characters in a movie harder than I did in that scene. |
|
Good god it was intense.
And the ending made me feel like I'd been punched in the stomach. That's one hell of a film.

13. I had read the book before I saw the film so I had an idea of what to expect. |
|
And the end still floored me. Klaus Wennemann as the engineer was absolutely incredible. I was in panic mode as he slid under those diesels trying to save them. Great flick. :)

It deserves far more recognition. It's one of my all time favorite movies.

17. That's an AMAZING film. |
|
My ex is a big submarine geek. I don't enjoy war movies on the whole, but he got me to watch this one and WOW did it blow me away.
It's not one of my favorite movies in the "watch again and again" sense, because it's pretty hard to watch, but it is one in the "well-made, well-acted, well-directed, intense and powerful" sense.
