Some stupid stoner kid rear-ended my car this afternoon.
I'm stopped at a stoplight, and I glance in my rear-view mirror and there's this car about a half-block behind me plowing through the snow in a median instead of driving in a lane. And he keeps coming and I can see he's not slowing down and *WHAM* he slams into the back of my car.

So I get out of my car, expecting to see the whole rear end caved in. The other car's front grill is totally smashed, crunched up against my bumper, which is completely undamaged. Tough old Saturn. So then I go to talk to the driver and he's just sitting there, no apparent injuries (no air bag -- it's an older Pontiac (I think)). I holler at him, something to the effect of, "What the hell was THAT? Why didn't you stop?" He rolls the window down part way and mumbles "I'm sorry, I just got this car a couple of days ago." He's obviously impaired in some way. I say "Are you drunk?" and he says no, and keeps just sitting there. I didn't smell alcohol so I figured he was on something else. He doesn't make any attempt to get out of the car to look at the damage. I tell him to back up a little bit to separate the cars, and he just fumbles for reverse gear.

I call the cops to report the accident and give them the license numbers of both cars. Another guy who saw the whole thing came over, and as we are standing there looking at the damage to the other car (the apparently stoned idiot driver is still just sitting there), we see a cop car coming up about a block behind us. And suddenly the stoned driver springs to life, puts the car in gear and starts to try to drive around my car. The witness and I get in front of him, yelling at him to stop, but he keeps coming. We had to jump away or he'd have run over us.

So he takes off down the street, heading for the freeway entrance ramp, just as the cops pull up. We motion toward the fleeing car and the cops turn on their lights and siren and take off after him. They catch him just as he gets on the freeway ramp. I wait a bit, then follow and park behind the cop car in case they need my statement. By this time the driver is in the back seat and the cops are looking all through his car, including the trunk. A flatbed arrives and the car is impounded.

The cops take my statement and send me on my way. One of them was totally HOT. I drove away, wondering what the stupid stoner kid would be charged with -- careless driving, DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, at least. Idiot.

So that was my adventure for the day.

1. I'm glad you're okay!
I got hit by a drunk driver a year ago. I was going 45 and he hit the back of my car going at least 65. I pulled into a turn lane, he moved over to the right and took off. They never found him. x(

3. Oh, not really -- just a bit inconvenient.
I think it was a much worse day for the other driver.

4. Ugh. That's the worst... seeing a car coming at you...
and waiting for the impact.

I'm so glad he didn't run over you, too, when you tried to make him stop. :scared:

That is definitely enough excitement for one day... or 3,000!

5. You actually thought standing in front of his car would stop him?
I would not have done that, it wasn't a very smart thing to do. If he was intoxicated do you think he really cared if you ended up under his tires?

ANyway - it sucks and shakes you up pretty good but at least you're not injured.

10. Did you make sure you gave him your number?
You said:
"One of them was totally HOT."

Did you make sure you gave him your number when you gave your statement? :P

11. That happened to my brother and me years ago - we got rear ended
Edited on Mon Mar-02-09 05:04 AM by old mark
by a woman who was so drunk after her car bounced off ours and two others and wound up sideways in the middle of a 3 lane road she thought she was still driving, was yelling out the window at the state cop standing next to her car, kept moving the steering wheel as if she were still driving. Totaled my brother's first new car - bent the frame, then glanced off a station wagon full of cub scouts and a tractor trailer.

Often wonder what she felt like when she sobered up.

13. Wow... I've never understood what kind of stupid would cause someone to do something like that.
Even if he was stoned out of his mind.

16. At the very least, DUI, Leaving the Scene of an accident and...
if for whatever reason the DA goes hardball, Assault w/a Deadly Weapon.

Oh, and if experience serves as any guide, I'm guessing he didn't have proper reg or license.
