Is it a bad thing that I had never in my life ever heard of "The Watchmen" until a week ago?

1. I hadn't either
To be honest, I don't have any sense that I'm missing anything, but... that's just me.

3. Nah. I hadn't either. No biggie.
Don't think I'll die if I miss the movie, either.

5. I see Watchtower every time instead of Watchmen.
It makes me want to pull the curtains and not answer the door.

7. Yes, yes it is...

Or it is if you are at least a casual fan of comics.

Alan Moore (the author) is one of a handful of writers whose work changed the medium. When The Watchmen was published in the 80's it was pretty ground breaking stuff. It pushed comics beyond the safe, bland "Pow! Biff! Zap!" of standard superhero tropes into more interested and complicated areas.

The fact that the movie is so faithful to the comic made my inner fan boy squeal with glee, but if you are not a comic geek, or even casual fan, then eh, The Watchmen probably won't do much for you.

8. Cool. Well....
....it's safe to say I'll probably end up seeing it when it comes out on video.

10. Eh, just go read the book before seeing the movie and it'll be a non-issue.
Or read it after seeing the movie. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do.

11. Meh.
If it is a bad thing, I'm just as guilty...but once all the hoo-ha about the movie came out, I vaguely remembered seeing the graphic novel in bookstores I've worked at.

Then again, I am powerfully resistant to the tractor-beam pull of graphic novels and their subsequent movie versions. In other words, I really don't give a rip about superheroes of any stripe. I'm even getting sick of Heroes.

16. It's not exactly Moby Dick, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
It's an amazing piece of pop culture, but it's not mainstream enough to fall into the "things everyone must know" category.
