Jeremy Clarkson makes it nearly impossible for me to enjoy Top Gear.
The enjoyable moments are grossly outnumbered by the times I just want to turn it off because of that arrogant, unfunny asshole.

The crowd seems to find him funny... I guess it's just not my thing.

2. He's hilarious.
A mockery of himself. His arrogance is half the comedy, considering so much of the show (outside of the actual car stuff) is a mockery of him.

4. His over the top arrogance is what makes him funny.
But you don't like U2 either, so I question your taste anyway. :P

5. Hehehe...
I figured out how to enjoy the show... just fast-forward the parts where he's attempting to be witty. :)

6. It is all an act. His role on the show is "arrogant buffoon."
A friend of mine knows Jeremy very well, and says it is all an act. He tells me that Jeremy is one of the most sensitive and compassionate people he's ever known (and he's known Jeremy for about 20 years).

Think of them like the Beatles:

Richard is the cute one
James is the quiet one
Jeremy is the funny one

7. But being an arrogant asshole is what makes him funny
Although admittedly, I watch it mostly for Hammond. :loveya:

10. I just love it when he yells "HAMMOND!"
The only thing that bugs me about the show is how formulatic the reviews are.

"It has been said that no car will ever top the performance of the McLaren F1"

*car zooms by*

Until now!

11. Yeah, that could get old
if I watched it enough. As it is I just catch a show now and then, so the only thing that is old for me is the schtick where Jeremy acts like a dick.

12. Then don't watch when he starts talking about Americans
:scared:

According to the inimitable Mr. Clarkson, we're all 600 lbs., dumber than Dubya, Republican fundies, love country music, have married our cousins, and drive really cheap "rubbish" pickups.

However, I agree with Mikey--it's all an act. And now everyone expects him to make outlandish statements, so he always has to outdo himself. Got him into major trouble recently, calling the prime minister a one-eyed idiot. To Jeremy's credit, he apologized for calling him "one-eyed" but refused to apologize for calling him an idiot.

13. It's not that it's his general arrogance. His 'in-character' persona.
I can't ever watch that part where they rank cars as cool or not, that's for sure. He's too rude to Richard Hammond. I don't get the humor in it and it just annoys me.

14. I know what you mean
His act rubs you the wrong way. That's understandable--different folks find different types of humor more to their liking. Me, I can't stand husband-wife-hatred-fueled-insult "sitcoms". Can't watch 'em--they're unbearable to me. :hi:

Different strokes... same as with Jennifer's acting, U2's music, Dane Cook's comedy, etc. :hi:

18. I found it odd that they went after Clarkson for calling Brown names
when you consider that you can walk into most pubcs in the UK and find plenty of people who are willing to say far worse.

Personally I find Clarkson amusing, but I'd take most of what he says with a good pinch of salt. Otherwise you could end up like this lot

19. But that's the BBC's m.o., no?
Frightened of their own shadow? Obviously I'm on the wrong side of the pond to judge, so let me know if I have that wrong.

As for the linkie--good gods, more than 470,000 people would like JC to be PM?! That's just... :scared:

20. Well yes the BBC are scared of their own shadow a bit at present
and as I've remarked before in the UK forum, Facebook numbers alone are a clue as to why some people in the Labour party with too much time on their hands sometimes like to go after him.

Mind you, Clarkson's RW silliness can get on your nerves if you don't share his views. I think that Facebook group was set up as a joke initially but I think there are a few on there who have genuinely fallen for it.

22. You can minimize the arrogance
if you concentrate on listening for Jeremy's saliva-infused inhalations before each sentence.

<wet inhale> "Our producers have told us to concentrate on more affordable cars. And we listened." <wet inhale> "But then we decided that's no fun."
