Someone just tried to follow me home... should I call the cops?
Went to my car after working late (a little past 10pm) and when I got in my car and started it up, a black extended cab pick up zoomed past me with its lights off. I just thought it was one of the drunks from the bar not far away, so I pull out of the lot and I see the truck has pulled into the lot next door and stopped, lights on finally. So I drive past on the street and it zooms out of the other exit of that lot onto the street behind me. At that point it seemed like he was following me, but I thought I was just being paranoid. Still, to be safe, at the next light, I turn right instead of left and it follows me. I fake turning into Taco Bell, and he pulls into the KFC just past it and does a quick turnaround in the lot ready to get back on the road. So, I pull into the Taco Bell lot and it tries to pull in, but I pull out quickly forcing him to turn around, driving right past me. I wasn't able to see the driver in the dark with the glare and possibly tinted windows. So I pull back onto the main drag and he follows me, a few car lengths back. I try these maneuvers again, and he keeps up with me, so I decide to drive towards the police station. It's not until I pull into the lot of the station that he goes on past. Rather than go in though, I decide to try to make it home, but as soon as I pull onto the street, there he is, so I drive down to the gas station and pull in there and he drives past again... I wait a few minutes and pull back out onto the street to see if he's laying in wait somewhere. He doesn't seem to be around, so I pull back into the gas station to fuel up, since I'd been on E all day anyway, and sort of as bait to see if he showed himself again. I gassed up and he didn't seem to appear, so I drove a roundabout way home without any sign of him.

I'm still shook up about it and wondering if I should call the police, tell my co-workers, or what. Any quasi-legal suggestions would be welcome.

For those who don't know, I'm a photographer and do a lot of art nude work, including some mild erotic work from time to time. I'm guessing this is some sort of angry boyfriend or some such stupidity playing out. The name of my company would be on the model release form, so it's possible that's how they found the office but didn't know where I lived.

SO, what the fuck do I do?

Call the police and say someone tried to follow me home and failed? Doesn't it become one of those situations where since there was no real crime, they don't even file a report until they actually boil my rabbit or something?

The other complication is that rest of the office isn't really aware of the type of photography I do. Even though I'm the boss, I've felt it best to keep it separate as much as possible. But evidently this creep knows the building and presumably the name of the company, and I don't want them showing up and raising hell there.

This sucks so bad... any suggestions?

1. Oh dude....
God, that's shitty. I don't know what to tell you. You could try reporting it, but without a license plate or any real crime, my guess is that you're on the right track with the "won't do much."

I would say, though, that it's probably time to talk to your co-workers, at least to let them know what happened and for them to keep an eye out, both for that specific truck, and anything else suspicious going on.

I wish I had some concrete, helpful advice. I cannot imagine how scary that would be.

4. You report it. No harm can come from reporting it.
There is a tiny chance that someone in a like vehicle is known to them.

Either way, you should ask that it be documented.

Please be very careful, be wary, try not to be alone for awhile when out of the home, and if there is a next time try for the plate number, or part of it.

I'm so sorry, sending vibes.

5. Thanks...
I'm a pretty big guy, about 6'3" and while most people wouldn't mess with me, I'm no match for a pickup truck, or a shotgun, or two rednecks with tire irons.

8. Crazy people often don't care about such matters.
I'm sure you considered having a camera ready to get a shot of the plate even in low light, if this happens again, which I hope it doesn't.

Sad thing is, even if you had the plate number, until there is a crime you might get very little help.

Creepy, I know the feeling.

6. Always know where youre closest fire/police precinct is!

You did the right thing by pulling into the police station, but you should've stayed and gone in, like it was normal for you to do so. Years ago a guy followed me home from the grocery store, and I pulled into the fire station a block from where I lived. I nonchalantly got out of the car with a bag of groceries, and away he went. A couple of firemen came out wondering what was going on with the strange girl with groceries, but when I explained it, they said I did the safest thing. Another time I turned into a military base (I did have base privileges), and that worked too.

9. That's crazy, keep your wits about you and see if it happens again.
Keep in mind that they might try to use a different vehicle. Sounds like they wanted you to know that you were being followed. Next time take pictures. Also keep in mind that next time they might try to be sneakier. Hopefully nothing bad will arise.

10. report it.
The police may be willing to do extra patroling on your street tonight.

I'm so sorry this happened to you.

For future reference, if you ever find yourself in this situation again, don't drive home. Drive straight to the nearest police station.

11. When in doubt, call the cops
I have called the cops for sketchy people walking down the street before, and I think it's best to get stuff documented.

Stay safe. :pals:

13. I would talk to the police about it.
Even if you don't have a license plate, you can describe the vehicle.

Sorry that happened to you.

14. Report it.
1. It may happen to you again.

2. It may happen to someone else in the future.

3. It may have already happened to someone else with the same or an even worse result. (The cops may already be looking for this truck.)

That's just the first three reasons off the top of my head to report it.

17. called the police... not much they can do
They offered to have an officer come over and talk with me, but it sounded like there wouldn't even be a report filed, but they might make some sort of memo.

They said I should have come in and immediately said something so they could put word out to look for the vehicle...

So, guess I'll head into the office early and tell people to keep an eye out without revealing the reason I suspect I was followed. Actually I don't know for sure why... it could have just been bored rednecks looking to fuck with someone's head and I crossed their path, or maybe they saw my Obama sticker and were hating on me for that.

Wish me luck!

18. There's a truck fitting the description in my parking lot...
Edited on Wed Mar-11-09 07:42 AM by gmoney
parked at the business next door, near where I parked last night. I've made a note of the plate and the name on the parking spot, but somehow I doubt that's the douchebag who followed me last night.

I'm still a little shook up and paranoid, but I'm calming down a little...

Although I did remove my Obama magnet and a couple other identifying items from the car. It's one of the most common cars in the country, so maybe it'll help me blend in.
