Another one of those "Evil People" stories this morning. John Jamelske
Over a period of 15 years, he held 5 different young girls hostage in an underground bunker. Some of them for years at a time. Raped them daily. Sometimes had them chained.

What is absolutely mind numbing, is that when he got caught and convicted, he insisted he never hurt them. And that it wasn't rape, they just lied. And the chains were no big deal.

That sick fucker was serious!

1. The Syracuse police department sounds like an effective force
"The victim also told police that he drove a tan 1974 Mercury Comet. Police searched unsuccessfully for registered Comets of this year and simply closed the case. It is noted that police failed to search any other year, as the car Jamelske drove was a 1975 Mercury Comet of the same color. Representatives from the Syracuse police appeared on Dateline and criticized the woman for providing insufficient information."

2. I saw her and that part on the show. They didn't consider her credible.
One thing Jamelske did was to have the girls write letters home, to assure they were okay. Or he'd kill their family.

So the Police, with that letter in hand, dismissed her story completely. Until a couple years later ...

3. I went to a presentation last year by the head of the domestic violence unit of the DA's office
A unit they never had until this woman pushed and pushed and pushed for it. She started with a staff of one - her - and has built it up to be a highly respected unit. But what they do is work really closely with law enforcement and social services and they have really educated cops about the realities and the psychological aspects of sexual violence. And her office directly handles all cases remotely involving this stuff which I think is great.
